After listening to a spectacular keynote from Josh Bernoff about storytelling through writing, I asked him a question–the answer profoundly affected the way I approach writing and I wanted to share the results of a test he inspired. When I speak publicly, I've found that starting with a story engages the audience, and makes what I say more memorable (thanks, Matt Garne r!) but I've found that writing that begins with a story leaves me thinking "c'mon, get to the point"! Can there be a good storytelling practice for writing where you don't lose the fickle reader who isn't willing to be lead along with an anecdote? I set up a test. I wrote two articles (released within a day of each other) for MarketingLand.com where I began one with a story (but followed Josh's advice and got the point out before the story) and another that just got right into the meat of it. Began with a story: https://lnkd.in/gtxsczj Right to the point: https://lnkd.in/g_D7CG9 My informal conclusion: I got significantly more feedback from the one that began with a story, and wanted to share for others who might appreciate. Here's the blog post from Josh where he explains how to lead with a story without losing your reader: https://lnkd.in/g_QhFcE …see more

[Replay time] how can you reposition like Madonna? Today’s one theory and one thought: Re-position. Repositioning is about changing the influence of how your market perceives you and your product/service. It’s not about changing your logo, that’s rebranding. Madonna is 60’ish years old. She’s an example of repositioning and reinvention. In this video conversation, we explore how we reposition during the covid-19. (See the YouTube links in the comment) #stringtheory on #personalbranding ps LinkedIn it sucks that your product feature, Linkedin live sucks. It’s understandable that it’s still beta or invite only. There are a few bugs to nut out. …see more

Random (or not so random) thoughts: My computer died. Perhaps writing a new book wore it out. Wore me out too. Being without my computer feels debilitating. But, I will have new computer w/ data transfer I hope by Thurs. Somehow, despite my cell phone’s potential, I can’t use it to write or do PowerPoints or edit. I have an article to post on Medium but it won’t post from my cell; Medium refuses to recognize my identity. Piece is on reopening schools/colleges. Another update: I’d been following Amanda Kloots’ posts about her husband Nick Cordero who was in ICU for 91 days and died Sunday. She had hope. I feel a loss, not because I know Nick Cordero personally (many know him from Broadway/TV). But, I believed in his capacity to fight Covid. He didn’t go gently into that goodnight. And I appreciate anger is rising among us. I’m extra mad at my alma mater Smith. They emailed alums that they had a culture of care for returning students. It focused on physical safety, impt to be sure. But, not a word on psychological wellbeing and institutional preparedness for traumatized students. Smithies are immune? Smith never paid attention to me (many stories there). They wouldn’t know or care that I wrote a book on trauma and student success, helpful for reopenings. Hum. …see more
Decency. Kindness. Honesty. Truth. Where have these values gone? Consider mean tweets from our President. Poor role modeling. Patriot’s cheating again and professing lack of intent. Poor role modeling. Again. A Florida Republican representative arrested for DUI denigrates Hunter Biden for addiction. Pot calling the kettle.... And poor role modeling. Golfer Patrick Reed not admitting his own rule breaking. Poor role modeling. And don’t get me started on the Astros. Instead of Melania Trump’s “Be best” — which isn’t proper English — what about “Be decent and be honest?”. That’s a motto worth fighting for and adopting in words and deeds. Would that people in power and the public eye stepped up to speak and act decently and truthfully. And I recently have focused on why it is so hard to speak up and out. Why is it so hard to ask people to be better? Complex to do, especially when swimming upstream against a culture that seems to tolerate bad acts. But, enough already. I just spoke up in no uncertain terms to a person I dated in my youth (initials BC) who back then crossed clearly set sexual boundaries I believed in and denigrated me for them. It took me 45 years. But there’s a lesson there that applies to the above observations: better late than never. …see more
A phenomenal article on the challenges of shifting to a value based culture in healthcare. Well done Philips.
See this new article on Princeton and women in leadership. I think it re-hashes what we know (mentoring matters) and misses culture change and self reflection. My comment follows link: https://lnkd.in/dTZf4wG I am struck by the total focus on mentoring for women; this is important to be sure and it is not new. What is striking is that there is almost no mention of institutional culture and the need to change that. How important is it to create an environment in which women can thrive as leaders. Were I to institute a look-see at Princeton, I would look at culture first -- what is it in the culture that enables men to seek and thrive in leadership posts. Hard to look inward and admit that there may be cultural biases and impacts and auras. Hard to face a male dominated past and current culture. Hard to be honest about what is inhibiting success. Mentoring matters for real. But, it is not enough. No indeed. …see more
