I believe in leading with and through symbols. They speak volumes. Leaders need to use symbols to build community and messages. That's why I'm distressed over the dress Melania Trump wore for the debate. To begin, it cost more than $2000 and imagine how much food/ how many kids' books that could buy for folks near Hofstra The Debate isn't a party or a runway. Off the shoulder dress seemed as if we were watching reality TV. But, the dress symbolizes how out of touch Trump really is despite the claim that he speaks for the general population. Who in the populous could wear/afford that dress? …see more

What is it like for a South Los Angeles native to be living in Florence, Italy, but teaching students at New York University Shanghai? A profound and extraordinary experience. I've got to share some photos of the fieldwork that students in Shanghai are carrying out. Perhaps educators here can use this assignment as a project because many of us are struggling to convert in-class work to the virtual. These are 1st year students. Their job was to do some fieldwork at a teahouse in the city. Blew me away. Their commitment to the class makes me wonder how wonderful we would be in the US, if we gave more resources to schools across the board, more respect to teachers and more honor to students. Now we're facing unimaginable gaps. US folk, we are behind the curve ball, the corner pocket, the corn field and the corner sto'. Teachers, please be safe, sane and as productive as you can be during this time. #teachers #china #internationalteacher #educators #collegeteaching #pandemicteaching #schools …see more

Great post @ Tim ! I totally agree. For such a "professional" platform, we could really benefit from reporting more and focusing on creating a platform where business ideas and commentary can be discussed without harassment.

The "gender pay gap" is a well-known "fact" that sadly many HR groups and companies shy away from rather than embracing it and trying to resolve it. Kudo to Salesforce for actively working to solve this problem, to be transparent about the shortcomings they had in this area, and try to retain its female talents. #genderequality #equalpay #gendergap …see more

Oops...Before you fall in love (with technology)make sure ‘they are true-blue...’ Turns out your Apple Watch has been cheating on you! According to a massive new study just published, turns out that the pulse sensor in Apple Inc.’s watch helped detect a heart-rhythm disorder in a small number of users but may have caused false alarms for others. As is true when it comes to physiology—and pathophysiology—our body systems are always searching for homeostasis. Meaning, our bodies are always trying to function normally and within a small band of performance. Yet normal variation exists in performance that are no big deal... Like your heart doesn’t beat exactly the same all the time. And it’s fine. Normal variation! But the Apple Watch might be mis-characterize these beats, and label them as more significant than they are. This is called a false positive! So you need to watch out for being over-treated or mis-treated if you seek care for this ‘normal’ variations. Selected Excerpt: “The study’s mixed findings hinted at the potential of “wearable” gadgets to detect asymptomatic health conditions in people that might otherwise go unnoticed.” …see more

As we approach The Eating Season, remember a few things... There are no ‘silver bullets’ when it comes to dieting. Just remember that everybody is different but every body loves fresh fruits and vegetables... So try to include them into your holiday eating—trust me, your heart (and waistline) will thank you come January! Selected Excerpt: “Dr. George Bray, an obesity researcher who is emeritus professor at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La., sums it up this way: “Eat the diet you like and stay with it.” …see more

Don’t Go Without Health Insurance. Enrollment is Open! The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is open for health care insurance coverage. And believe me when I say that you definitely want health insurance! Especially when something as simple as your child’s ear infection treated by your doctor could set you back several hundred dollars...or, a bad fall off your scooter (or run-in with a car at an intersection) could cost you several thousand dollars in the ER! And here’s good news: It’s the first year premiums are dropping-the cost is lower this year! And that’s true across the spectrum for the leanest health plans to the most comprehensive. Selected Excerpt: “This means more low-income, subsidy-eligible Americans can find a monthly premium cheap enough to be entirely covered by their subsidy.” …see more

Cough, Cough, Wheeze, Wheeze Clean Air? Who needs it—oh wait... I need it, you need it, all asthmatics need it, all people with lung problems need it. Oh—and so do the young and the old...these people need to breath clean air too. But forgot about it. It’s not a political thing—our air passages are pure physiology: breath in, breath out. The more junk in the air, the worse it is for our lungs... Regardless of politics, we all need clean air. Selected Excerpt: “As a corporate lawyer, William L. Wehrum worked for the better part of a decade to weaken air pollution rules by fighting the Environmental Protection Agency in court on behalf of chemical manufacturers, refineries, oil drillers and coal-burning power plants. Now, Mr. Wehrum is about to deliver one of the biggest victories yet for his industry clients — this time from inside the Trump administration as the government’s top air pollution official.” …see more

Job Opening: CEO of Amazon-Berkshire-JPMorgan health venture! Turns out the selected candidate turned the job down...curious. Truth-be-told, I was hoping the Health Venture would try to place an unconventional candidate in the Top Job...perhaps someone from a different sector who has built a new industry or radically transformed one. Even by choosing ‘the best of the Healthcare CEOs,’ means you will-at best-build a better mousetrap, rather than building an entirely new zebra. So, who wants a job? …see more

There’s a gap between healthcare and digital technologies. You know how much I love digital health gadgets. But until the necessary cultural transformation takes place, regardless of technology, we cannot make patients become a member of the medical team. And without that, they remain healthcare’s most unused resources. I’m discussing the future of healthcare and digital health technologies, as well as the need for cultural transformation in the podcast episode by 360 Healthcare. Tune in! Thank you Scott E. Just imagine me under the 🎄 , giving my grandma her present: an inflatable belt. I’ve got a hard time picturing this, but who knows? I’ve given serious thoughts to this after I interviewed TangoBelt ’s Product Development Engineer, Megan Riley . Falls among the elderly can ruin or even claim lives everywhere in the world. Hip fracture is the most common result of such a fall and it can take months of recovery – if one ever recovers from it. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, one in three women and one in five men will have a fracture at some point after age 50. Check out the interview and learn what Tango Belt can do for your beloved seniors! https://lnkd.in/ebkcHmM 💡 Please note: Patreon members of The Medical Futurist get early access to interviews such as this, and other premium, handpicked content. Sometimes communication slips - even with small, usually well-organized teams. We have 3 editors and a designer working hours a day to provide the most relevant, useful content to you. We try to synchronize our messages with current topics, the illustrations, and our narrative at the same time. And we usually thrive. Not this time, though. The lockdown hit our working process too, and we had to realize that we still have room for improvement in effective communication. Here, the only part of the basic idea that came through from the original concept was "... like a greeting card from a birthday cake". But the beginning of the sentence was: "The chip comes out of the pill...". We were discussing the concept of our article about digital pills. Have you experienced any similar communication pitfalls by working remotely? What was the most difficult/hilarious part? #wfh #DigitalHealth #DigitalPill #WorkingFromHome …see more

I believe all medical specialties, the pharma industry and patients alike will benefit from digital health and the technological changes of this decade. However, we can't deny that some medical specialties will benefit from it more than others, and the survival of pharma companies also depends on their adaptability to change. These 3 e-books aim to answer all questions related to what can we expect from these shifts in medicine and pharma.
