As the holidays roll around, you probably have two thoughts. The first is that it’s hard to believe (as always) that the year is about to end. The second? That it’s time to slack off, right? What could you possibly get done before the New Year begins?

Super proud of Joyce Rocelle Talavera on her recent acceptance to the prestigious Public Policy & International Affairs Fellowship Program at the University of California, Berkeley, Goldman School of Public Policy ! Go Bears! Joyce joined Close the Gap last summer and has made us all so proud in her commitment to uplift and empower others to close their gap. Though she comes from an under-resourced community herself, she continues to move towards helping her community. I hope you take Joyce's story as an inspiration that we can all make a difference in our community, no matter where we are in our life or career. I am very excited to work with Joyce to launch Close the Gap 's second annual Microgrants program to provide Chromebooks and close the digital divide for low-income students across the U.S.! #digitaldivide #gobears #ucberkeley #networkgap #closethegap #publicaffairs …see more

I'm pleased to share our new report on China's auto market, based on a survey of 2,500 consumers across 20 cities. While sales have taken a hit this year, China is still the world’s largest automotive market, and demand from both prospective and existing car owners remains strong. My colleagues at McKinsey believe the current downturn will be short-lived. Download the full report for free on our website: https://lnkd.in/f9EuQ-v #China #automotive #autos #consumers …see more

Doing a TEDx was one of the most edifying experiences. I learned how to hone a hot mess of ideas into a cohesive short talk. It took 6 months to get it right. It lasted 8 minutes on stage. Tamsen Webster gives away all the secrets here:

3 ways #Facebook pulled from Big Tobacco's addictive playbook: 1. Like adding sugar and menthol to cigarettes, Facebook added status updates, photo tagging, and likes, making status and reputation primary. 2. Big Tobacco’s bronchodilators (allowing cigarette smoke to cover more surface area of the lungs) is like Facebook allowing misinformation, conspiracy theories, and fake news to flourish. 3. Tobacco companies added ammonia to cigarettes to increase the speed of nicotine to the brain, like Facebook’s extreme, incendiary content— shocking images, graphic videos, and headlines that incite outrage— sowing tribalism and division. Tim Kendall, Facebook's first Director of Monetization testified before the House Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee this week claiming to have intentionally made the product as addictive as cigarettes. "These algorithms have brought out the worst in us. They’ve literally rewired our brains so that we’re detached from reality and immersed in tribalism. This is not by accident. It’s an algorithmically optimized playbook to maximize user attention -- and profits." Link to his full comments below. …see more

Jon Russo found 72% of marketers aren’t comped or credited for upsell efforts, instead focusing on new business. As he points out: “Why would a marketer focus on the customer if no compensation or credit is tied to the upsell experience that should add more value to the relationship?” Survey within. #CX …see more

“Customers are in the midst of a trust crisis,” Salesforce CMO Stephanie Buscemi recently observed. Citing a Salesforce study, she said “54% of customers don’t think companies operate with their best interests in mind.” Richard Edelman made a similar observation after the Edelman 2019 Brand Trust Survey published earlier this year: “Eighty-one percent say, ‘Trust in brands is an important part of my purchase behavior,’ but only one-third of people say they trust the brands that they buy. So that’s an incredible opportunity for brands... “Trust really matters for brands now. I think it’s a completely new moment for brands where it’s not enough for brands to communicate. You actually have to make a difference.” …see more

Personal politics aside, the #muellerreport demonstrates the IRA's #socialmedia efforts to divide, persuade, and shape American public opinion. Their accounts reached tens of millions of U.S. persons, running #Facebook groups like: "United Muslims of America"(300k followers) "Don't Shoot Us" (250k followers) "Being Patriotic" (200k followers) "Secured Borders" (130k followers) These made over 80k posts, reaching between 29-126M people. On Twitter the IRA's activity used two strategies: 1. Individual U.S. accounts 2. Automated bot networks to amplify content Accounts include: @TEN_GOP @jenn_abrams (claiming to be a Virginian Trump Supporter, 70k followers) @pamela_moore13 (claiming to be a Texan Trump supporter, 70k followers) @America_1st_ (anti-immigration persona w/ 24k followers) And it worked: "US media outlets quoted tweets from IRA-controlled accounts and attributed them to the reactions of real US persons..." This was effective #manipulation + #propaganda from a foreign entity in our 2016 election. Again, personal politics aside, this should be a powerful wake up call as to the need for social media literacy and education of all users of these platforms. https://lnkd.in/dcSJd8D …see more

Too often we see business leaders struggle to advance members of underrepresented groups because they model their development strategies on their own paths to success. They believe they’re good at spotting and supporting talent, but their support is informed by their own experience: “I looked like that five years ago, and this is what I needed to grow into the next level.” Our research suggests that company leaders are best able to recognize talent and understand others’ development needs when those talents and needs present themselves as theirs did; they often overlook—or are baffled by how to develop—talent that looks different. …see more
