"Big ideas come from the unconscious. This is true in art, in science, and in advertising. But your unconscious has to be well informed, or your idea will be irrelevant. Stuff your conscious mind with information, then unhook your rational thought process. You can help this process by going for a long walk, or taking a hot bath, or drinking half a pint of claret. Suddenly, if the telephone line from your unconscious is open, a big idea wells up within you." - Ogilvy, h/t David Cancel …see more

The car company BMW has redesigned its logo...kind of. I say "kind of" because it won't be used to badge cars. Wait, what? Why not? So, I'm sharing this piece I wrote last year about when a company should change its logo. TL;DR - only if there's a strategic shift or the original was poorly designed in the first place (or is dated in some obvious way). By not applying it to everything they do, BMW has signaled it's not the former. And from what I can tell it's not the latter. BMW seems to be suffering from "brand fatigue." It happens a lot. A venerable, well-recognized logo with brand equity baked in is suddenly changed. Sometimes it is leadership (marketing or otherwise) wanting to "shake things up" other times it's just that the company has been using it for so long they get bored with it and assume the rest of the world has as well. Unfortunately, neither are solid reasons for losing brand equity. #BMW #logodesign #graphicdesign #brand #brandfatigue #rebranding #visualbranding #logoredesign …see more
A lot of folks hear "brand" and think "marketing." The reality is that marketing isn't brand and brand isn't marketing. #brand #brandpositioning #marketing #brandstrategy #brandpromise #kaizen …see more
The mistakes people make with content marketing is that the content is marketing - it needs to be a service. Content has to be useful to its audience otherwise it will have zero impact.
A couple of days ago, Andrew Chen tweeted about how startups spending money on brand advertising is a waste. As someone who has written about this before, I have to agree. But, while startups shouldn't try to buy their way to brand recognition, they also shouldn't engage solely in "growth hacking.” Growth hacking techniques, used in conjunction with brand, are so much more powerful. Around '00/'01, the only people buying DVD players were early adopters. The ability to target them was limited. So our CMO at Netflix set up a bounty program for OEMs. They would place our "red ticket" on top of their DVD players at the factory and we would pay them for everyone who converted from a free trial to a paying customer. It was brilliant. The target audience saw our advert at the pinnacle of their DVD player purchase experience - the unboxing. Sounds like growth hacking, right? Yes, but the insert was brand-based. Meaning that the messaging, visual assets, colors, etc. all tied back to the brand position such that when the potential customer landed on our home page it was a continuation of the brand experience. It wasn't growth for growth's sake. Bottom line? Figure out your brand position so your company can grow with purpose. #advertising #netflix #growthhacking #marketing #growth …see more
Game of Thrones was cool and all, but #WatchmenHBO was the best sci-fi/fantasy series of the last decade
Let’s talk about it! I haven’t always been the biggest Kanye fan, and I’ll be the first to admit I don’t always agree with his political opinions. BUT! The way America has crucified this man as he’s attempted to turn his life around baffles me. I had a chance to attend Sunday Service, and I’ve never felt so loved and so accepted. The message of his new album? Love yourself. Love others. Stand up for what you believe in. And be the best version of yourself, unapologetically. How can I be mad at that? As someone who identifies as Christian, I’ve struggled to reconcile my faith with the judgmental, unforgiving and often downright hypocritical attitudes we often have towards others. I’m not perfect. If all of you knew my story and my past, you might cancel me too. No matter what mistakes we’ve made, or what terrible things we’ve said and done, we’re all God’s children. We’re not defined by our past, or our mistakes. That’s what #grace is! Newsflash: Reconciliation requires a willingness to reconcile, and cancel culture leaves no room for growth, change or humanity. When you are in the public eye, there is simply a standard of behavior that you must adhere to. Always remember, today's media lasts forever. Power, fame, these things can be heady and easily change one's perspective and behavior - if allowed to. But at the end of the day, how you treat people, how you guard your image, how you protect your brand, how you behave as a decent, thoughtful, respectful and considerate human being, these things will win the day. Matt Lauer spent 20 years at NBC, and now his legacy is tarnished. What's worth it? The temporary satisfaction of indulging in bad behavior, or being smart, and knowing when and what to say to whom when it's appropriate? Make the choice. …see more
