Despite the upbeat news on the vaccines, I think we are struggling mightily across the nation with three key issues: (1) Pandemic fatigue including Zoom fatigue; (2) Absence of interpersonal touch and connectivity; and (3) Upcoming holidays and "tradition" changes that distance us. In a sense, the second "surge" feels, at least to some of us, worse than the first surge; the numbers are perilously high; we have a dysfunctional transition of power (whatever your political persuasion) that is harming our nation. Some of us have become more isolated than perhaps even necessary due to fear as others flaunt mandates and best practices. In a sense, we are unaccustomed and unprepared for what is happening in our nation. We can rightly ask: how do we move forward with grace and wisdom and perspective? What compensatory mechanisms can we deploy to help all those who need help? And, what about our children and their ability to navigate forward? I have one thought: I have hope. I still believe despite some evidence to the contrary that people are decent and caring and at the end of the day, the better side of humanity and the wiser voices will rise to the top and be seen and heard. On my way to BC —- I could happily make Vancouver and UBC my home. Speaking to British Columbia School Counselors annual meeting at Pacific Gateway Hotel near airport. Doing a day long session tomorrow on how to deal with trauma in the schools. Many hands on activities and some theory to ground practice. Will have takeaways (literal and figurative) and have postcards related to my forthcoming book on addressing trauma in our schools (Teachers College Press 2020). Canadian groups are engaged and thoughtful and participatory. Excited to learn with and from then. One giveaway: kimochis! Excited to head to L.A. Care, a large public health insurer for dual eligible individuals and families in Los Angeles. We are doing a project linking healthcare and education as a way to break the cycle of poverty. Will be using Lady Lucy's Quest and Activity book in English and Spanish -- accompanied with a training session for the teachers/social workers in the Resource Centers. And every kid gets a book of their own. I will be reading on Thursday and Friday of this week to groups of 30 kids and parents. This is a remarkable project and one about which I feel deeply proud. Read This News About Blood Pressure Turns out there are “three B’s” we should focus on when we think about our heart health: Blood pressure, Blood glucose (sugars), and Blood cholesterol. People with high blood pressure are also more likely to have higher cholesterol and blood glucose levels. And this is important because heart issues still kill many more Americans than other diseases. Recent studies have found that for every 10 mm increase in systolic blood pressure, the risk of calcium deposits and cardiovascular events rose accordingly. The ideal strategy for optimal health is to focus on all risk factors — blood cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure. This might be boring but it’s important: Maintaining a healthful diet, exercising, not smoking and consuming alcohol only in moderation is good for your heart health. …see more
