What does workplace culture entail? Free lunches, team outings and shout-outs at milestones often come to mind, but I believe there are many more intangible aspects to it. It is the value system that a CEO contributes to the company’s DNA which allows employees to distinguish between right and wrong, and do the right thing without being told. Compare United Airlines and Southwest Airlines, for example. In a complex, high-touch industry like aviation, both companies have experienced their fair share of potentially reputation-damaging incidents. But their responses to emergencies couldn't be more different. Southwest's sensitivity and customer-first approach as seen in the recent NYC-Dallas flight incident (read here: https://on.wsj.com/2IXGDq0 ) stands starkly at odds with the careless and insensitive damage control measures taken too often by United Airlines to list here. My advice to founders and CEOs of startups is to never underestimate the importance of company values and culture. Yes, it is important to focus on building a strong product, acquire and retain customers, hire the best talent and scale the business. But it is only fruitful when employees align with your company's value systems. Culture should be a CEO’s priority from day-1. https://lnkd.in/f22RXWZ …see more

I made over 500 videos before anyone noticed. And that's how I know I love it because I have always created regardless if anyone was watching or not. There was a time where I had nothing to my name. I wasn't eating. I wasn't taking care of myself. And video was the thing that got me out of that and I know it can be incredibly beneficial for others as well. For anyone on the fence about creating here's why I do it: I make videos for the following reason: ▪️ It propels my business forward. ▪️ It allows me to tell my story, build social proof and brand equity. ▪️ To leave a blueprint for anyone that follows in my footsteps. ▪️ Because I love it. Why do you create video? Let me know, #WhyVideo and nominate others to join the campaign. I'm nominating Fabio , Shay , "SAM LISTER" , Chantel . #justQ 🖖🏽🖤 …see more

After WWII, Americans reached out to citizens of defeated countries—who had followed far worse leaders than the President we’ve just voted out—and helped them to rebuild. We didn’t celebrate their suffering. Today, they’re our allies.

I'm sure it's very different for many people, but I'm thinking for many people the last week has been FAR harder than the first. Between the anxiety of a unknown spreading medical condition that's being covered 24/7 , the stress of being locked up inside & being asked to work hard at your job, be a teacher and a parent at the same time. All with the uncertainty of when life will come back, what life will look like and incredible stresses on finances, relationships, health. We've lost any sense of normality, routine, predictability, or events we know we can look forward to. And we're doing this with reduced access to the places which make us feel better & give us perspective, being separated from those who make us feel better, and with media and algorithms continually trying to whip us into a frenzied paranoid mob. So hang on in there, I sure everyone is doing incredibly well, it's OK to not be OK, in fact if you're not, it's a miracle. And let's try to be forgiving and nice. …see more

Pretty much everything a company does is Marketing. Yet very little of it is "handled" by the Marketing department. Most of it is considered an expense, not an investment. Most boards don't have a Marketer on them. It's all very bizarre. Every company has ONE business purpose: to create a customer. The one department tasked with understanding customers is one of the least respected and under resourced. And I'm still baffled why we now have more and more data on customers, but this greater understanding of them is only used at the end of the manufacturing process to target ads and design propositions. Rarely ( and decreasingly ) in the middle of the process with ranging or merchandising, and rarely and decreasingly in the start of product formulation/product design. …see more

One of my major worries about the economy is that part of the horrible COVID-19 economic shock will prove neither temporary nor reversible. As an illustration, Bloomberg Economics estimates that 30% of recent US job losses are due to a "reallocation shock"--where "firms and even entire sectors suffer lasting damage." https://lnkd.in/gqQJjwb #economy #economics #markets #bloomberg #jobs #employment #unemployment #covid #covid19 …see more

Never gossip about crappy people behind their backs. You already can’t stand them. Why keep them with you in your thoughts when they are no longer there.

Quite a lot of people think Blockchain will change everything and fast. I'm not sure it will. As an analogy, let's assume a new 3D house printing robot is developed, it can create houses in 1 day, for $20,000. We know this should revolutionize housing and real estate. You would however still have buy land, you'd have to establish planning permission. You'd need to furnish it. You'd likely need to work with real estate agents to buy it. It would be priced at market value, not what it cost to make. So you'd need the same mortgage brokers you have today, relying of hand filled in forms and reams of paperwork and proof. You'd still struggle to buy a home without a steady job or 3 years income.  You'd have an underlying core technology that is profoundly exciting and powerful, that should in theory change everything,  made antiquated by the human beings it interfaces with, the politics of regulation, worlds of bureaucracy that won't change fast because maybe they don't want change.  The same is likely true of Blockchain. It's rarely about the technology, it's about the interfaces. Most companies still haven't worked around the internet yet. …see more

The business vocabulary is replete with win-lose, the legacy of our war-based society. "Kill the competition"; "Take no prisoners” I never felt comfortable with this kind of language. For instance, when I was building my company in California, one of our most important competitors made a presentation at a conference. I went to the CEO and said, ‘Hey, that’s really fantastic.’ And since then, we have been cordial and had some great conversations. The way to solve for #competition is to focus on what your product does better and win through loyal customer base. Constantly focusing on how to kill competition and reacting to it can be detrimental to a company in the long run. Your company’s #strategy can’t be every week, every quarter, driven by what your competition is doing. …see more

I used to suck on camera... like really bad! 😂 So I gave myself this rule: always finish the take. 🎥 Here's why: ✅ You don't get a redo when you're on stage. ✅ You don't get a redo when a stranger wants to shoot a video with you. ✅ You don't get a redo when you're pitching investors. It made me better on camera. But it also made me better on stage and better in conversations overall. Because you always have to find your way back to the point and finish the thought. If you want to improve, stop giving yourself redo's. Finish the take. You can always shoot the video again if you don't like it. #justQ 🖖🏾🖤 #business #entrepreneurship …see more

This infographic, FDA approvals for artificial intelligence-based algorithms in medicine, was designed and created by The Medical Futurist to give a clear picture about the state of A.I. in medicine and healthcare with an emphasis on FDA regulations. As I couldn't find a reliable and constantly updated database of every FDA approval for artificial intelligence-based algorithms, I decided to scan through a lot of peer-reviewed papers and FDA documents to create one so you don't have to. The infographic also contains what medical specialties the algorithms are associated with (sometimes more than one), when it was approved and what its function is. If you find any inaccuracies or you think I missed one, please do let me know so we can update the infographic. Most Large companies want to act like smaller, startup style companies and not the legacy businesses they are. Old companies are like adults, they have deep expertise, clear wisdom, they know what they do well, but can't change easily,. They are slow, entrenched and don't embrace risk because they've too much to lose in fixed costs/commitment/reputation, and not long enough alive for change to pay off. If Adults pretend to be teenagers it looks immediately wrong. Wearing youth clothing, with teenage body language and lingo isn't going to fool anyone, or make any difference. If you're an Adult and you want a younger, risk taking, faster, more naive, version of yourself with a long future you don't pretend to be a child, you have kids. Perhaps creating a new entity, with the same formative ingredients, that can learn from you, but not be tethered to you, is precisely the right metaphor and actual plan for digital transformation. Yet 99% of consultants advise the "buy these clothes and use these emojis" and you too will look young model. …see more

It's interesting that Coke removed the Chief Marketing Officer role. But I'd love to see the "Chief Customer Officer" as a thing. Their role to consider the voice of people in everything a company does. Fr products to experiences to marketing. All underpinned by innovation and data.

Yesterday we drove six hours north to visit Grandma Soumis. She was thrilled by the surprise as my little boy picked her a bouquet of flowers from her yard and we caught up, openly admitting my husband is her favorite grandchild 😂 She mentioned to me where she grew up, 45-minutes "down the road" in Freda, MI. She told us stories of learning to swim in cold Lake Superior and "voluntold" my husband to take me there... From what we saw, the town consisted of about 10 homes, one of which had a "gift shop", a veteran's memorial, and a Copper Mill in ruins. A once bustling town with families and even a movie theater was left as a ghost town in the '60's... We enjoyed the beauty of the shores 93-year-old Connie once danced along and appreciated being together with each other... for if it wasn't for her, I wouldn't have my family! 💝 During our six hour drive back, dodging hundreds of deer, skunks and turtles, I thought about what has happened over her lifetime... I reflected on how each choice we make in our lives can change the entire trajectory of our future and how important it is to continue spreading awareness. Be intentional and speak up not just for today, but for generations to come 💟 #growth #legacy #chantelshares …see more

Education reform is the need of the hour. Online education is a nice concept but not accessible to many children. Success in modern work force requires multi-disciplinary skills. I am a big proponent of ensuring students develop holistic learning and also life skills. The new education reform gives students more opportunity for true learning and finding their true calling. This is definitely a step in the right direction to make #India a powerhouse. #education is the cornerstone of economic prosperity. #NEP2020 can drive tangible outcomes. …see more
