Did I ever tell you about the time I almost lost everything I had in Vegas?? Yep, even Mr. Wonderful has made major money mistakes.
It’s often easier to learn lessons when we look at extreme cases. I turned to the military to understand trust. To learn about compassion, I turned to Bruce Deel. He’s an extraordinary man and the second chances his organization, City of Refuge, Inc. , gives people can teach the rest of us how we can do the same. Staff Sergeants Ben Brednicki and Matt Macky are Pararescue Jumpers in the US Air Force. Considered a branch of special operations forces, PJs are an elite group whose entire mission is to save lives. Both Brednicki and Macky have seen multiple tours of combat and experienced the stress and horror of combat medicine. They were kind enough to sit down with me to share how they deal with the stress and stay mentally fit with the hope that some of their training and lessons will help a new breed of combat medic - those who have fought and are still fighting on the front lines of our civilian hospitals during this global pandemic. If someone you know is front-line worker, share this with them. Ask for help. Be there for each other. Never cry alone. …see more
Its not really such a great thing to be an #entrepreneur. There’s no real “FREEDOM” in it. People think that starting your own #business gives you freedom. It doesn’t. When you work a #corporate job where you only, realistically, work for 1-2 hours a day and you can leave your work at the office, then you have freedom. Entrepreneurship == slavery. You are a slave to employees, partners, investors, a board, clients, potential buyers, reporters, landlords, random people off the street who try to come into your office and rob you, etc On #Quora recently someone asked “When can I call myself an entrepreneur”. I’m happy to share some general guidelines: If someone hasn’t had this experience, they shouldn’t call themselves an entrepreneur: http://bit.ly/2tGx0kG …see more

The biggest opportunity for physical stores in the modern age isn’t silly tech like smart mirrors or one hour delivery. It’s merely making check out lines far far shorter shorter ( and have all staff able to process payment) , make it far easier to find products, keep less inventory on display, combine online and offline stock and processes, and offer far far far far better customer service. Also make it easier to cross and upsell. None of this has been done in 15 years and it’s shocking. Work around modern expectations not new tech. …see more
Today's global healthcare crisis forced most providers to adopt previously despised technologies. Telemedicine - which failed to achieve the intended size and popularity until last month - is the most striking example of such technologies taking a 180° turn due to COVID-19. While at Microsoft , I had five personal encounters with Satya Nadella: 1) I accidentally ran into his office during a call with Wall Street analysts 2) Three months later, in an elevator, where he asked me if I was the person that ran in his office. He simply asked if it was important and whether I still needed his help 3) When I "mistakenly" parked in the Microsoft Giving Campaign spot that he bought for charity :) 4) At a HiPo luncheon, where we chatted for 30 minutes about an initiative I was leading 5) Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at 10:46 AM, the day he became CEO of Microsoft. I sent him a congratulatory email that, among other things, had this direct ask: “Empower the engineers, enable us to deliver faster and better, break down the bureaucratic barriers that keep us from executing” On quite possibly the most consequential day of his professional life, Satya responded, a mere *six minutes later*: "Thank you…… and thanks for the feedback…. Also I would ask you to give yourself permission to lead/push as well…. thanks" Are leading with empathy/focusing on employee psychological safety effective? Look at Microsoft's stock price (congratulations on a stellar quarter!), innovation, and employee morale since Satya became CEO. The results speak for themselves #leadership …see more
Why is everyone working on Uber for sandwiches or Tinder for cats, and not bloody finding a way to leverage technology and innovation to improve the democratic process, find a way to reduce corruption in the world, improve health or the way people get news and form opinions, or better empathize and build bridges with each other.

At the core of #leadership is TRUST. Three things then to promote trust. 1. Be Fair. Give honest feedback, genuine empathy, credit generously where due. 2. Be a Learner. Be curious, listen actively, value others insights. 3. Be consistent. Do what you say you will do, keep commitments, your word is your bond. Empower others and begin every relationship with #trust , more often than not trust is reciprocated. …see more

The only way to protect our planet is by reducing and recycling waste into useful products. Countries that produce maximum waste into the world are the United States, Denmark, New Zealand, Switzerland, and Canada, among others. For a populous country like #India , special attention to waste policy can make a big difference to global carbon emissions and pave the way for a greener #future . Every business, every consumer can do something about this. #Sustainability #WeekendMusings Video Credits: Tech Insider …see more

This is a bulleted FAQ on starting a business. No joke. If you’re a lawyer, feel free to disagree with me, so you can charge someone your BS fees to give the same advice. If you can think of anything to add, please do so in the comments below. I might be missing things. If you want to argue with me, that’s cool, too. THE FUTURE OF COMMERCE IS VOICE!!!! The future of Content is Video, text is dead. Images are everything. So why do I absolutely hate Voicemail? Why is it I loathe phone calls? Why do I immediately back out of any news content that tricked me and is video? Why is our primary communication text? And that the world runs on email? The more you know about technology, generally the more you don't understand about humanity. Predicting the general path of the future is pretty easy, it's about empathy. I think we kid ourselves it's harder than it is. …see more
