There's a ton of uncertainty for founders of early-stage companies right now. When 500 decided to transition our Demo Day online, it was new territory for us as well. But that makes it all the more rewarding when we 3x our normal number of RSVPs and held an awesome event. It's one of my proudest projects at 500. For startups and VCs looking to host online Demo Days and other events, we put together a short guide on how we hosted our Digital Demo Day. Check it out. #onlineevents #digitalevents #events …see more

Real Facts, Real Evidence: Gun Violence When scientists and doctors and researchers try to solve unsolved problems, they use certain tools including sound reasoning, empirical and repeatable evidence. One of the primary ‘jobs’ of science and evidence is to determine fact from lies so that we, as a society, can always be better. This article is a great overview about what does and does not lead to gun violence, which every health care profession believes is a public health crisis. Selected Excerpt: “Scientists find that only a small fraction of people with persistent mental distress are more likely than average to commit violent acts...” …see more
When Did My Health and Illness Become Your Business? Why is health care coverage political? Call me simple-minded, but as long as I’ve been alive, being ‘American’ has always meant something including: having functioning fire departments, working street lights, city library, reliable postal service along with hospitals and doctors that are available to serve their community. They way I see it is that The Affordable Care Act (AKA Obamacare) was a ‘refresh’ to the Great American Dream. Why? Because I no longer needed to worry about my health care. But no. So now (again) we have the Court taking up the issue of whether the ACA is constitutional. And if they decide it is not? Well, plan to spend your time not building your business but rather worrying because, Insurers would also no longer have to cover young adults up to age 26 under their parents’ plans; annual and lifetime limits on coverage would again be permitted; and there would be no cap on out-of-pocket medical costs. Also gone would be the popular protections for people with pre-existing conditions. Selected Excerpt: “Without those protections, insurers could return to denying coverage to such people or to charging them more. They could also return to charging people more based on their age, gender or profession.” …see more
Up, Up and Away: Uninsured Americans Up since 2016: Uninsured working age Americans Up since 2016: Health insurance rates among lower income Americans Up since 2016: Uninsured Americans in states that did not expand Medicare Up since 2016: Uninsured Americans aged 35 and older The marked gains in health insurance coverage made since the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in 2010 are beginning to reverse. If you have any pre-existing medical problems (like asthma, diabetes, heart disease, back pain, arthritis, ..), or if care about cost of medications or what you will need to pay out-Of-pocket, then you absolutely want to keep the ACA around. My message: VOTE like your life depends on it. …see more
This new device was developed with the goal of personalizing clinical treatment by delivering a medication through the outer layer of the skin. The big breakthrough in this is that the microneedles that deliver the drugs are usually manufactured through micromoulding, which is difficult to customize). Researchers now made those microneedles through 3D printing. The microneedle patches can also be manufactured on-demand, removing the requirement for storage space within clinics and laboratories. May I be a bit bold here? How about diabetes patients self-administering customized doses of insulin with this easy to use device? #microneedles #3dprinting #3dprinter #3dprinted #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #technology …see more

Previously we’d been watching case numbers rising, now we’re rather focusing on tracking the vaccinations on live dashboards all over the world. Now COVID-dashboards are getting another useful addition: diagnostic test dashboards, which helps public health officers to evaluate the numerous available tests that flooded the market. #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #COVID19 #COVID_19 #coronavirus …see more
