I'm a little surprised more people aren't talking about why the newly launched Kitchen app is such a brilliant move by the Food Network . Here's how they are transcending their status as a mere TV channel by adopting bits of OTT and eCommerce: 1/ A Netflix -like (Netflix when it was aggregated content) repository of all Food Network Cooking shows available anytime you want. 2/ MasterClass -like catalog of cooking lessons from Food Network stars, chefs, etc. 3/ Peloton Interactive -like live classes that allow you to cook along live and ask questions. 4/ You can use the app on voice devices from Amazon for hands-free cooking (as someone who cooks, I can tell you this will be amazingly helpful when trying to follow a recipe). 5/ Integration with Amazon so you can get all of the ingredients delivered. I haven't tried it but even if there are hiccups now, kudos to the Food Network for this savvy, strategic move. #amazon #peloton #netflix #masterclass #interactivelearning #ott #foodnetwork #kitchenapp #cooking #homecooking #strategy #businessstrategy #ecommerce …see more

Retailer thinks “more = better” instead of “better experience = better” and pays the price. Again, this isn’t about a retail apocalypse. I am of the opinion that unless one of the Brand Attributes of a company is "neediness," they shouldn't use the subject line "We miss you" for winback, rejoin, or cart abandon emails. Especially if there is a special offer in the email to entice the person back. Lead with benefit. #marketing #email #emailmarketing #subjectlines #copywriting #brand #branding #brandingtips …see more

Very excited to be speaking 2 weeks from today at the AMSRS Festival of Research in Sydney (my first time there too). I’ll be sharing how we leveraged qualitative and quantitative research at Netflix for various stages - startup, growth, initial international expansion (pre-Netflix Originals). #marketresearch #qualitativeresearch #quantitativeresearch #netflix #marketing #product …see more

Sure, "45 million accounts" sounds like a big number, until you consider that there often multiple people watching on one account. So the actual number of people who watched Netflix 's Bird Box is actually quite a bit higher. This is stunning. Also, this is what it looks like when you have control over content creation, own the relationship with the customer, and have a global reach. #netflix #ott #streaming #entertainment #global #disney #amazonprime #hulu …see more

Well, I'd say this is a pretty strong indicator of The Walt Disney Company 's ability to spin up a streaming service and have it be relatively successful in a short period of time. The combo of a relatively low monthly price and content you can't get elsewhere is the real draw. I'd imagine when they launch their streaming entertainment service, Disney Play, they will find a rather large instant subscriber base as well. Not looking forward to the "Disney launches Netflix killer" headlines but oh well. #streaming #ott #espn #disney #netflix #brand #marketing #subscription …see more

Meanwhile, in Dubai... Btw, if you think current data processing and edge computing alone will cover autonomous cars, trucks, drones, etc., you need to bone up on live data on Satori and how it can allow for computation w/o a need to expand the database footprint. …see more

For the entire time that I was Netflix , I had the wrong idea about networking. Turns out it's not backslapping and exchanging business cards (ugh). It's about building actual relationships. This is an excellent if not lengthy read on networks by Patrick Ewers . Shared with me by friend and former Netflix colleague Joel Mier, DBA (now VP of Marketing at Contactually ). Give it a read. …see more

Looking at the title of this article you might think, ah, diversity of thought. But read it. It's like a primer for common sense and mother wit - two things that are often missing from today's workplace.

Covid Positive! I heard this expression today and I thought this is what we all need right now. We need to reflect on the good and look toward the future. Create a list of all the #Positive things professionally and personally that the pandemic has brought to your life. #covidpositive 1. CPAs more than ever embraced change and new technology. After years of my evangelizing they adapted and survived. 2. CPA’s embraced their role as financial first responders and have a new understanding of what advisory means. 3. I was able to spend time with my mom before she died and to grieve at home. My crazy work travel ended. 4. I learned a lot about myself this year. #growth I did well in my new role and had so many wins. I was also stretched and stressed and everyday I showed up to figure it out. Not all my days were good. There were a handful where I just opted to take a day and hide from the world... There were special people who covered for me. I have a completely new understanding of what it means to “be there” for someone. Colleagues and friends showed up for me in ways I never expected or had experienced before. #gratefulheart 5. I know there will be a business renaissance #hopeful #cpa #radicalcpa #accounting #cpafirm #cpalove #wfh #accountants …see more

A friend forwarded me this oldie but goodie from HBR. It has some great information about why common diversity strategies don't work, but it also offers strategies that do: transparency, social accountability, task forces and programs around college recruitment and mentoring - things that aren't necessarily labeled diversity yet produce that result. You've been warned, though. There are a ton of links to other articles that look very interesting, but be careful where you click. You know HBR has that cap on how much you can read without getting behind their paywall LOL. …see more
