At Bright Machines , we challenge ourselves to do better :) #brightpeople #robotics #dobetter #hiring
Lior Susan, head of Eclipse, talked to #TechCrunch a bit about us today, among other things. One key takeaway: "And it’s on a $100 million annual revenue run rate already in less than a year as an independent company." Oh yeah: #hiring #dayone ***** TC: How did the Bright Machines deal work? The startup started as an internal project at Flex, so do you co-own it with the company? LS: It started internally at Flex. There were 400 people working on it internally, and I went to [Flex management and its board] and I said, ‘I want the team.’ Flex said, ‘Absolutely no.’ But I went back with a better argument why they should, including that they needed to hire talent that wasn’t going to come to work for Flex, and that the company could be worth $5 billion, $7 billion some day. And after 12 months, we carved out the company, with its [intellectual property] and the $350 million in contracts it had, and we created a new company, and we own 20 percent, Flex owns 28 percent, and the team owns the rest. And it’s on a $100 million annual revenue run rate already in less than a year as an independent company. TC: What do you see happening with Bright Machines? LS: it will go public, I’d guess in sub five years. The model is pretty compelling if you’re doing it right. …see more

I cannot stress this enough. Listen. To. Your. People. ***** "One recent example involves Olive Garden (OG), whose parent company Darden was taken over by an activist investment firm (Starboard). A story in CNN’s Money in 2015 reported that the investment firm mocked OG’s strategy of unlimited breadsticks prior to dinner. Darden’s top management naturally defended the practice since that formula had worked for years. Once Starboard took over and stopped serving endless breadsticks, patrons spent more on alcohol and desserts since they didn’t fill up on breadsticks. Sales and profit went up. When managers at lower levels in the company had presented the same logic, they had been ignored by top management who “knew better." …see more
Hey, check this out, we made #1 on a list!! Also, 2-3 years ago or so, some presumably illustrious newspaper painted us as a company whose "cause [is] delivering swim goggles and rolls of Scotch tape to customers just a little quicker." I may have written something in response to the effect of: "In 1997, Amazon revolutionized the way the world shops. Today, we’re the world’s most innovative technology company that just happens to sell books, among other things. We are a multi-faceted business that spans the breadth of technology innovation, from cloud computing to devices to search to advanced robotics, and countless other spaces. It’s not an easy place to work. We thrive on challenge, innovation, and winning. We believe that every day is still Day One." Dunno, kind of going to continue to go with my assessment on this one. Also, it's #stillDayOne. Always Day One. …see more
I’ve just read something on FB that made me think. Who was your influential teacher. It doesn’t have to be just one or only from school. I suppose the who and why are the important bits. Mine are: Mrs Allsop - she taught me as a junior but importantly she taught me to read books. Not read but to read books (I need to do More) because she read to us at the end of every day from the classics with fond memories. My brother who is no Longer with us but who taught me some of the practical skills that have stayed with me for life and that you are not limited by your start in life. A colleague Ken Kneale who very early in my career taught me basics of CCTV but also converted me from this straight line engineer to a thinker outside the box and as an apprentice Steven Howarth who is still the best engineer at hiding cables in the business. My friend and best man Neil Hussey who brought me out of myself. And current colleagues Patrick Jefferies Dip GAI James Harvey Duncan Rigby FBLI Roy Buckingham Dip.GAI Reg.AI M.InstAI Rory Grant Pip Courcoux That I’m still learning at 51 but I also hope I’ve had some influence with people I’ve worked with in the past and present. Don’t forget people who helped and influenced you on the way through life. …see more

Not all doors on an escape route will be Fire doors and not all Fire doors will be Escape Doors. So I've seen a few posts and conversations recently regarding Fire Door Inspections, Fire risk assessments etc. The conversations seem to revolve around whether a inspection should include all doors or only designated fire doors and should they have and follow a FRA. Maybe a few people are missing the point and maybe missing an opportunity. For example the last door to escape the building is not likely to be Fire Door because it doesn't form part of a compartment. Does that mean the Inspector would leave if out of their scope? If a door is on an escape route but isn't necessarily a FD30 or FD60 should it still be inspected against BSEN179 and/or BSEN1125? yes it should. so maybe there are a number of doors in a building that aren't necessarily Fire doors but do form part of an escape route and are integral to life safety, yet the discussions seem to be about just the Fire doors. If you or your company would like to expand their knowledge and possibly increase revenue talk to Abloy UK or sign up for the Abloy Foundation course here: https://lnkd.in/dRwMXdT #Abloy #doorsets #firedoors #firesafety #doors #lifesafety #fire #locks …see more
