“We don’t get a chance to do that many things, and every one should be really excellent. Because this is our life. Life is brief, and then you die, you know? Robert Lerman writes that achieving a healthy future of work requires employees to build skills that help them attain productive and rewarding careers. He notes - "one of the most cost-effective ways to do this is through apprenticeship, which helps workers master occupations and gain professional identity and pride". Let’s face it. You’re probably like most people. You’ve heard about the workplace automation probably taking your job. But it won’t happen to you or maybe anyone you know, right? Much hot air is spent on the topic of workplace automation and its consequences for workers. Opinions are divided. Some people forecast we’ll take automation in our stride, as we have in the past. That displaced workers will be absorbed into new and emerging industries. Others foretell of a gloomier future. Read on. Join the conversation. …see more

This is National Teacher Recognition Week. These are remarkable men and women who need our support. Their role cannot be overstated: they are educating the next generation including future leaders and teachers and nurses and community members and fathers and mothers. Let’s help them do their jobs as well as they can with fiscal and emotional support. And that is a challenge now during the Pandemic. And let’s not forget that they teach all our children.... all our children. #teachers #ourchildren …see more

Honored to be on this list of best books for college professors in 2017.  Nice indeed.  And, the book can help teachers across the K-12 pipeline.

I am writing a book titled Generation Trauma Goes to School. With the recent shootings in El Paso and Dayton, I was struck by a need to finish the book ASAP. Time is a wasting. Then there were the false alarm traumas — in Times Square and at another mall. Our autonomic nervous systems are on high alert. Finish the book already I said to myself. Then I have been reading about the Boy Scouts (apparently girls can become scouts now) and a deep dark history of undisclosed pedophilia with Scout Masters (and assistants) abusing boys. Not 10 or 20 boys although that would be bad enough. Hundreds. Trauma alert again. Our schools, colleges, workplaces and communities are filled with traumatized adults and children. Yet, we remain remarkably trauma naive. Signal: finish the book already. We need to wake up. Yes, prevention. But for some, prevention is too late. Healing is needed. Educational institutions need to become trauma responsive. That’s my focus but so do workplaces and communities. One question in addition to our lack of preparedness: Where are children and young people safe? Ask and answer that question ASAP. …see more

Part 3 of 3: Okinawa I’m not the best traveler. I do pack light (never check) and try to get from Point A to Point B in the quickest way (the price is worth it). I use airport lounges. Here are 4 things I’ve learned from my recent trip from DC to Okinawa and back. I write this as I sit on one of several flights home. (1) I roll my clothes. Yup. Roll them and they take up less space and they rarely wrinkle. (Our dog, a basset, is more wrinkled.) (2) I’m trying a melatonin regime for the 1st time —taking it at night starting before I leave and then switching to a.m. with a gap day and continuing when home. So far so good. Will provide an update. (3) It’s good to try new things — judiciously. Japanese toilets are really remarkable but I wasn’t game to try them in a public place (the gizmos that is). Kept wondering about the quality of the water. My point: Try new things smartly. Don’t try some new food if you’re going on a boat excursion. Eat local. Why have McDs? Local food is fresher. (4) Look at television a bit for several reasons: sports and language. In Japan, lots of baseball and ping pong. My point: it has a cultural value. And listen to the language of the nation where you are. News Japanese is well worth it. OK — there might be a Part 4. …see more

Listen to this at least 10 times. Ask about what this meant to a nation. Ask about grace (or its absence) today and imagine our current president demonstrating grace, whether or not through singing. This reminds us of real grace. We need more of it. For real.  Now. With a White Supremacist March today in DC, it is all the more important to listen -- and listen -- and listen. https://lnkd.in/e26RHG3 … #Charleston #grace #president …see more
