Tell everyone about your idea. Entrepreneurs are notoriously paranoid. You may think that talking about your business idea on social networks will result in your competitors stealing your idea, but that won’t happen. Work on something that isn’t easy to replicate and ensure you have the right team to build it. Value is in the execution, not the idea. https://lnkd.in/gWn6maA #founder #startup #entrepreneur …see more

Courage isn’t comfortable. Courage means breaking out of your comfort zone. I compiled a market ecosystem map of the cryptocurrency data & analytics space https://lnkd.in/eWXXfe9 a market which could potentially see the next $1B companies emerge from. Unlike traditional financial markets that data which underlies Bitcoin and Crypto is largely public (due to the blockchain) which puts more natural demand on the data providers & sources in the space. Check out the post from a primer + map of all the companies in the ecosystem. #bitcoin #cryptocurrency #data #blockchain #analytics …see more

As an educator, it is hard for me to see cities boarded up. I can't help but wonder, regardless of one's party, what this means for our children. Is this the United States of America we teach about? Do we still have hope?

Good news about forthcoming resource to help students, families, teachers, community members affected by trauma. The premise of The Feeling Alphabet Activity Set, co-authored with Dr. Ed Wang, is that if you cannot name your feelings, you cannot tame them. Feelings lead to thoughts and behaviors, forming a triangle. And, we need to identify feelings -- negative and positive ones. This activity set can be used by people of all ages and stages; the activities can be ramped up and down. And, they are fun and engaging. It is NOT a work book -- with the emphasis on work. Instead, it is about finding a pathway into feelings. Watch for the downloadable set at https://lnkd.in/eaWQeJ6 . It is right priced too so it can be used by many without financial stressors. And, share with us how it works with your audiences. Can be done in short spurts -- 5 or 10 minutes or longer if desired. Flexible nimble trauma responsive learning tool. Keep your eyes out for it!!!! …see more

Help me understand this. We are rightly worried about coronavirus (now renamed COVID-19) and a pandemic. Forget for a moment our apparent incapacity to deal with it world wide. I ordered 99.5% coronavirus mask for upcoming travel. Call me an alarmist. Now: The flu in the US affects more people and kills more people than the coronavirus. Deaths are well in excess of 10,000 and affected individuals exceed 19 million. Why does that reality not set off alarm bells? Is short, I am asking why flu falls into levels of low interest while coronavirus/COVID-19 is headlines? Do we consider deaths by flu just part of our life cycle? Help me understand. Do data seem irrelevant? Maybe data are wrong? Insights?? …see more

Can you hear me yelling YEEK? The press is now characterizing those who are having a psychological response to the threat of the virus as either OCD or struggling with anxiety disorders. This is just plain wrong. The threat itself is traumatizing -- for those with and without a history of trauma. Please read this piece on the impact of this on colleges and universities. It has broader applicability. We need to pay attention to the psychic impact of the threat of COVID-19. It is real; it is not a sign of mental illness; it is a response to trauma. See: …see more

A quick post. Saving a small college (saving anyone or anything) isn’t easy. And it doesn’t always work. But I am not done trying to save Southern Vermont College. The final nail is not in the coffin. And I want a replicable and scalable model given all the small non-elite colleges failing. Yes, the Board withdrew the appeal and everyone in power is focused on closing. A “good” closure is important but it is not a victory. I still have ideas percolating. I am not scared to think boldly and innovatively and I understand risk. Doug Flutie knows about Hail Marys. Many have seen last second three pointers — and guess what, sometimes they win the game. You don’t and can’t count on Hail Marys or three pointers when the clock is at 00.01. So plan accordingly but don’t give up. There is no reason NOT to keep trying. Isn’t that what we teach and preach? Don’t give up. Open new doors. Try. Try again, even in the face of naysayers. At least if you try, you will be able to sleep at night in the coming months and years. There is value in peace. # In the meanwhile, show support for saving a college by giving and messaging: https://lnkd.in/epz9TZv. …see more

Here's a lesson for leadership in a time of crisis: When things go wrong, a leader needs to own the wrongs that have occurred. It's easy to cast blame on others who held power in the past. But anyone holding a leadership position for more than a year or two has to take responsibility for current messes/mistakes. And, new leaders, this is hard and I know from experience and my own errors: you can only blame your predecessor and institutional bad acts for so long. Once one gets the lay of the land, a leader owns the institution's past. Ownership is key to trustworthiness, the ability to live with oneself and to take real action. Blame gets you nowhere. Why do I raise this now? With all the institutions struggling with one crisis or another, particularly in education, we can see the value of being forthright. Stand up and own what went/is wrong. And, then take the steps needed to remedy the situation. Think Georgetown owning its slave past. Remarkable. Think Penn State not owning its silence. Troubling. And, by the by, PR folks would agree: It's best for institutions moving forward if their leaders step forward. Remember the President of Columbia who climbed out his office window to avoid student protesters? As they say in the law, res ipsa. #presidency #leadership #crises …see more

As the sun rises post vote on now Associate Justice Kavanaugh and as I watch the waves lap into the shore, I wanted to say I will be writing several pieces on the impact of these events (non-political commentary) on higher education --- how the events impact students, faculty, staff, coaches and community. In the meanwhile. I am reflecting on who we are as a nation, the messages we are sending to our children young and old. And let me leave this post with this question: Are we proud of who we are and our behaviors throughout the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings and how do we move forward on so many fronts with civility, decency, respect and a deep regard for truth. And ask: is there truth? Not a philosophical inquiry: a real life question to ponder in all its dimensions. …see more

So, ponder this article in InsideHigherEd. The College of Idaho is trying a co-presidency. This is a topic on which I have written and supported -- not in every situation but in some situations. Consider when it will work well. I had pictured something different from what they are doing (one experienced academic w/ one business person for instance or folks with very different skill sets -- a student life expert with a scholar w/ experience in grants).  I wrote a note on the IHE piece referencing an another article I wrote on this topic. https://lnkd.in/ewrHitg So, let's watch. Let's see what happens. The College seems to be in a position to benefit from talent at the top.  Give the new co-leaders a chance and let's learn from the experience. …see more
