The philanthropic act of billionaire investor, Robert F. Smith, CEO of Vista Equity Partners, gave the ultimate gift to #Morehouse graduates—the promise to pay every cent of their student loans. It also gave people a sticker shock at the price of education and looming student debt crisis. Smith pledged to wipe out student loans estimating to be $40 million. The math shows that the class of 400, if divided, would have each walked out of a liberal arts college owing $100,000 in student loan #debt . Though the act of Smith has been noted as a generous and bold philanthropic action, the numbers show the predicted next bubble. Hmmm. The Dream Team of Healthcare Talent Can't Score... Apparently Haven, a radically new healthcare company led by the CEO's of Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway and JP Morgan Chase has folded, just 3 years in... Turns out, this company, filled with the world's top brainiacs, had executed their own projects separately, with their own employees, obviating the need for their own joint venture! Why form a team if everyone is planning to score points on their own? Could it be that these folks view themselves as so smart that they felt their plan was the best (and only) plan? Could it be these super stars couldn't compromise? Could it be that these titans couldn't appreciate that 'perfect is the enemy of good?' Or, could it be that none of them realized that 'healthcare could be so complex...' Count me as sad. A dream crushed! I had high-hopes that new thinking would lead to new care. We certainly need new ways of doing old things--especially in health care delivery. I'll look forward to following the story as it unfolds.
