A first for me today - Breaking from my work routine to read a book to kids over a webinar :-) As part of finding new ways to help our employees balance the priorities of work, family and managing their households, our TransUnion Africa business introduced an AFK hour (Away from Keyboard) some months ago. During this time no business meetings are scheduled and employees are encouraged to break away from their work routines and spend time with their families, have lunch, go for a walk, etc. With many kids still away from their physical classrooms, this past month we introduced Kids Connect as an extension to the AFK program. Today I had the chance to read a book to children in the 8 - 12 age group. Tough audience and my nerves were shot. I said yes (to sleep tracking). I've tested around 20 sleep sensors including masks, watches and devices going under the mattress. The Sleepon ring promises to track sleep, wake the user up if their blood oxygen level is low and has an integrated smart sleep alarm function too. It sounds like the sleep tracker jackpot so I had to test it. Here is what I learnt after the first night. I don't have sleep apnoe, my sleep score is high but my deep sleep was not long enough. My oxygen level was normal and only turned around 8 times. There are things to improve and I haven't tested the smart sleep alarm function, the Holy Grail of sleep tracking, but will do tonight. Geeking out with @Lenovo at #CES2020 I had the rare chance to spend time with Lenovo's senior executives to talk about their new global mission: "Smarter Technology For All." With Kevin Beck , he went behind the scenes on the development of the ThinkPad X1 Fold. The foldable PC took 4 years to create because they had to develop it from scratch. Typically Lenovo's development process takes 18 months. Dilip Bhatia shares the process of customer success and how important feedback is. We can already measure so many vital signs and health parameters with wearables. But EEG (cc. brain waves) has always been an outlier. The company Muse has been the leader in this space, but no matter how much work they have put into their device, signal strength is an issue due to the nature of measuring EEG. Even while I meditated with it, if I blinked one, the signal strength changed. Muse did help me learn how to meditate better, but I stopped using it eventually because I couldn't reach mindfulness with a device on my head. Now Brainlink International, Inc. was kind enough to send their device to me. Their headset has a relaxation and a focus training component too. I plan to test both, but obviously, I'm much more interested in the focus training. I used to test the NeuroSky headset with a drone so when I reached a certain level of focus, the drone started flying around. There is no drone now, but there is definitely a place on the market for a focus training, EEG-based device. I'll keep you posted. (My face? Just to clarify, these are not my organs but my heart rate! I got early access to Virtuali-Tee's new heart rate tracker feature. It visualises your own heart rate in augmented reality through the app. It will be a fantastic addition to science lessons bringing a fun new dimension to learning about the heart and circulatory system. My phone's LED got a bit hot during the process but the visualization is excellent as usual! I gave them this feedback and they immediately responded to solve the issue. The app uses your phone's camera to measure the amount of light passing through your fingertip and detects tiny changes as blood passes through to calculate heart rate accordingly. EyeQue Corporation was kind enough to send their latest kit, the at-home Vision Monitoring Kit after I reviewed their previous device. It includes the VisionCheck, an upgraded version of the Insight and the PDCheck to check your pupillary distance with a selfie. It’s quite like having a basic checkup at the optometrist right at home! We just tried the VisionCheck to get our EyeGlass Numbers which are similar to lens prescriptions. By attaching the device to your phone with an included rubber band, you can measure the refractive error of each eye by performing 9 visual tests on each eye through the companion app. These tests revolve around using the touch controls on the device to align colored bars on-screen. It’s quite user-friendly and there’s a helpful audio guide throughout the process. You won’t get the most accurate result at first (as the app mentions), but with more vision tests and less deviations obtained from the readings, you’ll get a more accurate EyeGlass Number. While it’s clearly not meant to replace your annual eye checkup, it allows one to keep track of how their vision changes over time. You can then share the data with your eye care provider for better insight rather than the once-a-year measurements traditionally performed. #digitalhealth #eyecare …see more

I've watched the whole evolution of Kardia devices from the beginning and I couldn't wait to test the new Kardia 6L device that allows a 6 lead-ECG measurement. It was easy to use, simple to set up and quick to finish the analysis. Just like in the case of any Kardia device before. When Netflix launched streaming, it was only available on PCs. Then on Macs. Then game consoles (XBOX 360, PS3, Wii). Then came the opportunity to be available via Apple TV. However, despite a back and forth between Reed Hastings and Steve Jobs, Jobs stuck to guns - no color logos on AppleTV. It was too big of an opportunity to let get hung up by the desire to always use a full-color logo so I had the task of trying to figure out how to best represent it with those constraints. These were the ideas I came up with. If I remember correctly, we ended up negotiating with Apple to either the 2nd or 4th one on the right. This is the first smart clothing I've ever tested. It was a real challenge to turn the device on, I even needed help from the developers behind it, but finally I was able to test it during a gym session. HeartIn is a wearable ECG monitor with an automated stress/fatigue level determination and A.I.-based arrhythmia diagnostics. Viatom was the first manufacturer whose product made me feel like the tricorder from Star Trek could actually become a reality. Now they’ve sent me their newest product for testing, and all I can say is that they came up with a great idea again. It’s basically a blood pressure monitor on the arm and an ECG when held in both hands. Brilliant! It has a digital screen and of course a connected app as well. What’s small and can fold? The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold. The last time I saw this PC was a prototype in Beijing. It was slightly scruffy and I pondered out loud out on how they will design the fold. Now it’s ready to be pushed to the wider market in 2020! It’s so pretty. I heard first hand how they developed and designed the fold. They are 11 layers that defines that fold! A certain bevel/gap is required to not break that fold. And to maintain its integrity, - separate keyboard slots into the screen. While the desktop is not dead, I found that our experience of work has becoming more remote and flexible. As I travel quite a bit, I want to have the least amount of “things” to bring with me. Which is why I got excited by this foldable PC. Our laptops are becoming smaller, more flexible. Even becoming more powerful. We can travel and work. We can work at home. We can do anything with tech that enable us to work and play. I've been spending time with the Clarius Mobile Ultrasound system with surgeons and sonographers testing it with me. It's a bit heavy, but wireless. It comes with batteries that can be inserted like games into video game consoles in my childhood. It shows a high quality image and it's pretty easy to use. Joy for All sent us a robot dog to test it. They design these companion pets to bring comfort and fun to elderly people. These are interactive cats and pups that are aimed at providing an experience of companionship. You can imagine how skeptical we were... but it turned out these robots can really provide a level of companionship. We also tested it with the youngest member of the family and not only she felt the dog is now part of our family but she also felt she had to take care of it and play with it respectfully. Just like in the case of a real dog. More Netflix history. Prior to 2004/2005, the grey "security screen" printed on the inside of the DVD mailer that prevented people from being able to see what movie was being sent, was a tangle of grey squiggly lines. After chatting with our Ops team, it was revealed that it didn't need to be that, it's just what was done. So, we changed it to genres instead. Sometimes communication slips - even with small, usually well-organized teams. We have 3 editors and a designer working hours a day to provide the most relevant, useful content to you. We try to synchronize our messages with current topics, the illustrations, and our narrative at the same time. And we usually thrive. Not this time, though. The lockdown hit our working process too, and we had to realize that we still have room for improvement in effective communication. Here, the only part of the basic idea that came through from the original concept was "... like a greeting card from a birthday cake". But the beginning of the sentence was: "The chip comes out of the pill...". We were discussing the concept of our article about digital pills. I talked with a professional video game streamer, Blyyy, who was super kind and shared all his insights about live streaming. We have seen numerous examples of how speakers do it wrong (you know those terrible Zoom check-ins), so I thought why not be inspired by those who are definitely professionals in such technicalities? I learnt that * He sometimes streams for 12 hours a day. Then he exercises (he often exercised in the stream encouraging his viewers to train with him). * He told us what technologies (hardware and software) we need to use for a good stream. It seems we will experiment with YouTube Live first. * He shared how he "branded" his audience, started calling them by a name that is unique to his channel. * He described how hard it is to maintain contact with them and keep them engaged while sitting in front of a camera and a green screen with his hands on the keyboard and mouse. * He hasn't used a biometric sensor but some of his colleagues have showing their pulse during intense gaming moments. * Many streaming services have a significant lag (even almost a minute) which would make a live Q&A unbearable. I enjoyed a tour of tech incubator 1871 this morning. It's a sprawling, collaborative space buzzing with new ideas. VP of Programming George Vukotich shared some interesting stats and stories. For instance, we discussed why mentoring is critical to succeed or fail faster in the startup environment. Failing faster is actually a good thing. It saves time and resources, and with the right adviser an entrepreneur can regroup and potentially adapt an existing idea in a new direction. …see more

Fantastic appointment with Aaron Ballard Ridley last week after a hospital trial using Abloy Cliq system. The positive feedback we had on the day from the Staff. “Saves time”. “Not chasing staff for keys”. “Safer medication storage” “Audit trails” “Why haven’t we had this system before”? During the trial two keys could not be accounted for. Usually this would involve estimating at what point the key went missing, who was on duty, then the time consuming task of contacting all staff, including locum staff which can be a challenge. On this occasion, the Cliq system an it`s auditable trail, allowed us to identify when the key was logged out and those keys that were not logged back in, allowing us to directly contact the RN and returning the keys in a timely manner. All RN staff were positive about this new system and find it addresses a long standing problem in relation to timely access to keys, safe custody of medications, lost and/or missing keys, timely replacement broken locks. To quote the feedback of most of the team “you’re not taking this system away”, rarely is such a system met with such positivity and have a noticeable positive impact on releasing time for patient care. …see more
