Here is the promised Part II to Article written by Marc Wine on why we are failing in our disaster relief efforts as relates to healthcare. Showcases opportunity to link block chain with telemedicine.  (Part II contains a hyperlink to Part I in case it got missed.)  Both are worthy reads.  Why don't we do better when we have technology to help others? Seriously, we aren't deploying existing assets.  I don't understand why we have technology but don't use it, especially to save lives --- thousands of lives.   https://lnkd.in/dvpgFaY …see more

Consider this piece as a statement about the importance of public service. We need quality public servants -- even when things are tough. As the old saying goes, when things are tough, the tough get going.

Consider the potential sale of a music college (small) to a Chinese education company. Should we care who owns our educational institutions? Should we care who are the students? Should we permit all educational institutions to be bought by the highest bidder (moving them from being non-profit I assume to for-profit)? What is the role of the accreditors? What recourse do the students/professors/staff have, if any? See: https://lnkd.in/dFm9hRa #educationpolicy …see more

Glad to see that all area colleges were included. Key to include 2 and 4 year institutions and perhaps prospectively other post-secondary approaches and those with different specialities. Access to rather than fear of colleges and post-secondary education is key --- particularly in a state with high school grad rates and low progression to college. …see more

Lest you think the plant-based meat movement is going to remain niche, not only is Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods gaining mainstream traction, Jack in the Box is trialing their Unchicken Sandwich, and now grocery chain Kroger just announced an expansion of their offerings as well. And to be clear, none of these products are designed just for vegans. In fact, they're aimed primarily at people who eat meat but are wanting to cut back. And it is just getting started. #veganbusiness #veganfood #impossiblefoods #impossibleburger #beyondmeat #kroger #groceryindustry #wholefoods #sprouts #jackinthebox #fastfoods …see more

This is what dying industries that don't know how to react to consumer trends do. They file absurd lawsuits over words. Just like the dairy industry's failed fight against non-dairy drinks using the term milk, trying to prohibit companies like Tofurky from using "burger or "sausage" is ridiculous. But more importantly, even if they win, it will do nothing to stop the trend of more people becoming flexitarian or switching to a plant-based diet. A complete waste of time and money not to mention a clear signal that they are out of ideas. #strategy #plantbaseddiet #tofurky #fakemeat #beyondmeat #impossiblefoods #futurefood #plantbased #wholefoods …see more

Brand matters. “I’m just curious, which vaccine am I getting today? The Pfizer one?” he inquired. “No. We’re giving out the Moderna vaccine at this location. It’s just as effective as the other one,” I replied. Mr. Boch looked disappointed ― a little deflated, even. He turned to his wife and sighed, “I guess we don’t have a choice.” “Mr. Boch, can you help me understand why you prefer the Pfizer vaccine?” I asked. “I don’t know. I feel like I’ve heard the name Pfizer so many times before, seen them on TV,” he said. “It’s just a brand I’m more familiar with. So, their vaccine just feels better,” he surmised …see more

Nine years into recovery from the Great Recession, labor-productivity-growth rates remain near historic lows across many advanced economies. Productivity growth is crucial to raise wages and living standards. It also helps increase the purchasing power of consumers growing demand for goods and services. Please read and re-read this article (bravo to the men who participated) and respond to the notion I was told by one publication that the "Kavanaugh" issues are no longer a news peg. I beg to differ. These are issues affecting many, including in our schools, our colleges, our workplaces -- as students, teachers, faculty, staff, workers, administrators. These issues are in a pot that is still cooking on a stove. For sure and for real. The question, raised in the 5 part series I wrote on this, is how we can help schools, colleges and workplaces help their students. See: InsideHigherEd (suggesting pop-up courses); New England Journal of Higher Ed (suggesting integration of issues/substance/knowledge into existing classes and hypervigilance); Forest of the Rain Productions and LinkedIn (pop-up courses for K-12), University Business (strategies for workplaces and culture shifts -- forthcoming), and a to be placed piece on how elite private schools can change their culture apropos of the "Kavanaugh" debacle. …see more

one of the areas where i readily admit a weakness when assessing a startup for a potential investment is capital efficiency. i do not spend enough time on that and do not have enough comparable data points to use when analyzing. sure, it is easy to figure out what a capital raise will produce in terms of milestones. but weighing how capital efficient a startup is or could be over a long period is tricky. it probably is very indicative too. for example, i am often suspicious of big rounds in early stages startups and of high burn rates without clear operational details to back such moves. thoughts welcomed. #vc #venturecapital #startupfunding #entrepreneur #entrepreneurship #startups #investing …see more
