The idea Airbnb is a "Tech Company" is ludicrous, it's a website you are able to upload photos to and put your location into, and that others can browse. It's technology that was routinely available in 1995! I love the company, the idea, the brand, I like the ethos, but I'm really not convinced by any of the fundemantals behind it, and why it fails to make any profit despite hefty fee's. Hard to see why it has defendable moat. Hard to see what it actually "has" or why it can grow much. More than anything it's largely based on breaking laws, avoiding health and safety requirements, shunning local tax requirements and putting all responsibility on hosts. We mock the dot com crash because "all you had to have was a website" to be valued like a tech company and it seems we're in the same maddness. …see more

Everyone keeps talking about "digital skills" and how that can help ensure your job is safe. I've no idea what a digital skill is. Here's a thought. If your job is based in Excel, you are most easily replaceable ( number crunching) , if it's about moving things around ( manual labor) , you are safer, MS Word (communications ) , you will last even longer, but it's Powerpoint based jobs ( ideas and creativity) that will be most safe. …see more

In any presentation or pitch based process a group or person may spend 40-100 hours preparing. About one hour delivering and zero hours getting feedback or group reflection on what worked and what didn’t. This always seems odd to me.

Our company has officially more than doubled in size. We have a team of 10 (eleven if you include my pup). It's awesome looking back to see how far we've come in a short time... but even cooler looking to the future. Here are some things that we've done differently than my previous ventures that failed in the past. - Being intentional about the culture we have/intend to build. This will turn off many people from working with you, but will attract the RIGHT people. - We & I. We work as a group and we help everyone individually as well. One of the first questions we ask when hiring is "how can we bring value to you?" - Being honest even when it hurts. This took me a while to figure out a balance. But I'm a very blunt person. We make less mistakes that way and grow closer as a team when we just say it as it is. - Going to the talent... not relying on the talent coming to us. We get resumes and requests to work with us every day. Which is incredible. But one thing we learned early on is that [typically for us] the people that are the best fit are already employed or not looking. You have to be proactive & patient.
