This week my daughter signed "two for seven" meaning she committed to serve 5 years as payment for the degree and leadership training she is receiving at the United States Naval Academy. That service will be wherever the Navy decides her training, education and skills are of greatest use. Edna Adan Ismail describes herself as a #midwife and a #nurse first and foremost. She has been a Minister of Family Welfare and a Foreign Minister. She has been a World Health Organization Representative. After leaving WHO, Madame Edna decided to build a hospital for pregnant women in a region with one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. Meeting Madame Edna changed my life. When I was 22 years old and working as a summer intern at The New York Times , my main source of courage while navigating that intense newsroom was a battered old copy of Ralph Waldo Emerson's Essays. I can't explain why the pronouncements of a white male 19th century New England philosopher resonated so much with a young black female from an impoverished 20th century Midwestern background, except to say that even before I knew it, I was determined to be authentic. I interviewed Jordan Syatt today – Gary Vaynerchuk 's trainer. And as he was telling me his story he came around to how he became GaryVee's trainer. And the main thing was that 1). he had been putting in the work for years. 2). he was creating content. 3). A relationship that he fostered lead to something unexpected. Never forget how far you've come, how strong you are, and how much you've accomplished. Never forget whose shoulders you stand on, whose friendship you've savored, whose encouragement fueled you. Never forget that you are always, always tougher than you think you are, and that even closed doors can't blot out the sunshine of hope. And always remember that you are a leader to some, a mentor to others (and even a villain when necessary!), but always, always, you must be authentically you. 20 years ago, I was President of the Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS) , and that organization taught me how to be the leading lady of my own career. That energy carried me across the seas to East Africa,  kept the wind in my sails, and then blew me back home.
