Seeing a lot of companies announce they are closing offices and moving to work from home. Seems like a very limited way to think about it. Talk about how you are rethinking the nature of work, you are entirely rebuilding everything in recruitment , talent, training and the tools we need to best do our jobs. A huge part of that will be empowering people to do jobs in the way they see fit, recruiting people from more diverse backgrounds, eliminate the need for degrees, find ways to support life long learning and fuel ( and hire for) curiosity. Use best in class equipment and software to act as levels for what we can do. And one small part would be rethinking where you expect people to be, how long for, on what terms and how often. I think I’m alone in that I’m way less concerned about surveillance capitalism than I am with how social media is designed to fuel our outrage or how every screen has been designed to trick our biochemistry into addiction or how algorithms create vast entrenched viewpoints that endlessly optimize to ensure you only ever connect with those like you. What's your zone? 🖖🏽 For me it's when the camera is rolling. I enter a state of flow; that state of mind when everything makes sense and you're in the zone. When I was a kid it happened often when I was writing stories or songs. I would lose track of time and just work. Those flow states have always fascinated me. Some things that help me find that zone: - Doing what I love. - Consuming more content aligned with my growth goals. - Keeping a daily journal. - Exercise and adding meditation to my daily routine. - Removing myself from my usual environment (e.g. travel). In my work as a consultant, I’ve uncovered a big secret. Generally, people are REALLY good at solving their own problems. During my coaching sessions, the majority of the time, I’m not talking at all. I’m listening! I’m listening as people think aloud and explore the nuances of their issues in ways they previously hadn’t. You don’t always need an expert to help you solve your problems. What you DO need is time—time to think, time to weigh all your options, and time to reflect. But that time won’t appear all on its own. You have to schedule it! You have to think.
