Tony Hsieh, the former CEO of Zappos, inspired a lot of people with his strong sense of conviction and direction. He was a brilliant, offbeat, and — to many people, often very directly — kind-hearted person who was regularly described as a visionary. RIP, Tony Hsieh I always looked up to him as an #entrepreneur and thoroughly enjoyed reading his book, Delivering Happiness, A Path to Profits, Passion and Purpose. As I’ve said before, words have power. The power to unify, bridge gaps, and promote #understanding and the power to divide, build walls & prevent meaningful dialogue. Every day, we have a choice in how we use them. If you find yourself uttering words like “us” or “them,” you’re creating a scenario where no one benefits. You’re forcing people, ideas & issues into one-size-fits-all boxes. #Communication stops, and people shut down or become more enraged & dig their heels further into the ground. It’s negative, unproductive & perpetuates divisiveness. Realize that labels like that are simply stereotypes, a lazy shorthand for those unwilling to invest some time to understand perspectives differing from their own. There are many stories, experiences & opinions worth considering. Not every (fill in the blank) is (fill in the blank). Instead, encourage discussion by enlisting your genuine curiosity and desire to learn. Ask thoughtful questions of those who hold conflicting opinions to yours to help you understand their views. It is possible to disagree with someone and still respect their point of view. In this time of great uncertainty, one of the few things we can control is our language. An impressive late day rally did more than erase an almost 300 point loss for the Dow. It also allowed it to almost break even this week as a whole, as well as maintain a solid performance for the month -- albeit under-performing the surging NADSAQ and S&P in all three time periods (reflecting the continued impact of tech). More generally, and judging from the price action of the last couple of weeks, two inter-related themes seem clear: The "stay at home" positioning is again dominating the "re-opening" portfolios; and Unless the stocks benefit from a positive multi-faceted theme (as is the case for several tech names), they risk getting stuck in the muddled middle ... between good technicals and uncertain fundamentals/policies. #markets #stocks #tech #investing #investors …see more

I wish I could buy stock in the States of Florida and Texas and short NY and Ca. I still think working from home won't be the default for a changed working world, and we're not on the edge of a leapfrog to a new era. But I think eyes are slowly opening to the lack of logic in forcing employees to work from extremely expensive, stressful, high tax locations on the basis of it "being what world class companies do" and to be near each other.
