I’ve tried a digital detox before. When I was working on my second book, Indistractable, I got rid of all my gadgets. I thought that if I just got rid of my distracting devices, I’d be able to complete every task with ease. And it worked! ...who am I kidding? Of course it didn’t. When I got rid of my devices, I’d have other thoughts that would pop into my head 👇 • I’d look at my shelf and think, “Oh, there’s that book I’ve been meaning to finish” • I’d reorganize my desk over and over again • I’d find chores around the house that seemingly couldn’t wait I kept finding distractions. And this is when I realized something incredibly important: Distraction starts from within. If you can’t sit with your family for an hour without looking at your cell phone, I got a newsflash for you: It’s not a cell phone that’s the problem. The first step to dealing with distraction is to master internal triggers like loneliness, boredom, stress, and other uncomfortable emotions that can drive us to distraction. How we deal with uncomfortable internal triggers determines whether we pursue healthful acts of traction or self-defeating distractions. #Indistractble #Health #Productivity …see more

Beware of liminal moments. Liminal moments are the transitions from one thing to another throughout the day -- the moments where you check your phone between meetings or during a break. It’s in these “just real quick” moments when thirty seconds could turn into thirty minutes without you realizing it. One of the tools I use for dealing with this distraction trap is the “ten-minute rule.” If I find myself wanting to check my phone when I can’t think of anything better to do, I tell myself it’s fine to give in...but in ten minutes. This technique gives me time to do what behavioral psychologists call “surfing the urge.” When an urge takes hold, noticing the sensations and riding them like a wave—neither pushing them away nor acting on them—helps us cope until the feelings subside. If I still want to perform the action after ten minutes of urge surfing, I’m free to do it, but what I’ve found is that it’s rarely the case. Surfing the urge is a mental skill-building exercise and it helps manage the impulse towards distraction. #Indistractable #HumanBehavior #TimeManagement …see more

A few months or so I got an email saying that I was accepted to be a speaker at INBOUND. 🎤 😯 Which will officially be the largest speaking engagement I’ve ever done. A few weeks after that I got an email saying that I’ve been accepted as an INBOUND fellow as well and I’m hype — free All-Access pass to the event every year, even if I’m not speaking that year. This past year has been filled with so much growth. Everyone that’s supported me, I appreciate you. I’ve come to a place where I’m comfortable with who I am and my talent. I’m not out to impress anyone or out to prove myself. I just want to prove to myself that I can do everything I have my mind set on, and help others do the same in the process. Here’s to the future. #justQ 🖖🏽🖤 📸 Eric Didier …see more

Busy people take on everything and offer unfettered access to their time, expertise, and attention; productive people set #boundaries .🔐⏰✅ Here’s how: 1️⃣ Don’t answer emails when you should be sleeping😴 Emailing into the wee hours of the night deprives you of rest and teaches others that you’re accessible 24/7. Instead, set a cut-off time and stick to it; most things can wait until morning. 2️⃣ Ask if your focus should be on this OR that🎯 It’s fair to ask your boss or client how this new request ranks with current responsibilities so that you can focus on what’s important now. 3️⃣ Do, Decide, Delegate, or Delete📌 Not all tasks are equal. Place your to-dos in four boxes: Do it now for urgent and important items, Decide to schedule a time to do it for non-urgent but important tasks, Delegate it to someone else for urgent but unimportant things, and Delete items that are neither urgent nor important. 4️⃣ Take back your calendar🗓 You are not obligated to be always available, so carve out pockets of non-negotiable time for what’s important to you. 5️⃣ Learn how to say no❌ One way to politely decline: “While my priorities will preclude me from assisting or participating, please keep me in mind for future endeavors.” #leadership #career #IlluminateMe #timemanagement …see more

Our 2019 list of the top 100 digital health companies is out! This year we feature companies that address a real-world need! https://lnkd.in/gQKe3V9 The digital health market is extremely volatile: start-ups show up, promise to disrupt the entire health scene, but go down just as fast having not received the necessary funding. Others change their profiles, partner with big pharma companies or lose the battle with another venture providing a better technology. Not to speak about the hype, buzzwords, and overmarketing, which calls for careful consideration. In spite of all the challenges, The Medical Futurist team is working tirelessly to stay ahead of the turbulent market changes and bring you the Top 100 Companies In Digital Health in an e-book every year. #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #book #reading #read #ebook …see more

A deep learning network trained by open-source images exclusively outperformed 136 of the 157 dermatologists and all the different levels of experience (from junior to chief physicians) in terms of average specificity and sensitivity in a German study. Such studies are crucial in helping physicians adopt advanced technologies such as deep learning algorithms. Also, imagine how much such algorithms could improve with good, annotated data. #healthcare #health #algorithms #digitalhealth #medicine #healthy #deeplearning #AI #artificialintelligence #dermatology …see more

Firings forced me to look at my life situation, take a bigger picture than I was taking, and figure out the new slices of life I can now taste. Being rejected is an invitation to sample more from life. And having a checklist helped me ignore all the bad chemicals that were trying to bring me down. #Madoff forced me to look at my life with a bigger lens. I started new businesses. I channeled my frustration into more networking, into ideas, into experimenting with my creativity to try new careers. I do the items on this checklist almost every day. Thank you Bernie Madoff. You did very bad things. And I met you when I was lost in my life. This is not about you. Or about me. It's what you and I did together. Here they are... 10 things you need to do if you were #fired yesterday:  http://ow.ly/YhRN30iRjU6 …see more

It was great catching up with McKinsey's global managing director Dominic Barton in Hong Kong today.  I had the pleasure of working with Dominic back in his Shanghai days, when he led our Asia practice. In the nine years that he has led our firm, we've expanded into many innovative areas of client service, from data analytics, digital transformation, and design, to new business-building, implementation, and leadership development. We've also vastly expanded our reach into new locations around the world. Dominic has spearheaded the founding of Generation, an innovative program that places disconnected young adults in jobs, giving them the skills and support they need to achieve enduring personal and professional success. Since its creation in 2014, Generation has launched in 47 cities across 5 countries – India, Kenya, Mexico, Spain, and the United States.  In total, more than 10,000 students have graduated and 84% of them have found jobs. You can find out more about the program here:  https://lnkd.in/fSbZQUE …see more

I'm really excited for the next stage of the internet. One where people who've grown up with the internet, who know how it works as a result, can start telling coders what to make. Because this world where tech minded folk have led the way isn't anything like as good as it will be. The signs of tech people with too much control over the design process are everywhere. The signs of enthusiastic people who understood human nature, and used imagination to create wonderful things, are few and far between. …see more

It's got to the point where I'd probably use a site like P&G. com or Unilever. com to buy stuff directly. Anything to bypass the horror of Amazon for such things. Just make the signup process easy, make the site easy to navigate, have free delivery on orders over $20, offer monthly/bimonthly subscriptions, bundle products too. I know both companies tried it before but it was too early. #marketing #retail #digitization #hashtag #cpgindustry …see more

A huge mistake companies make about their customers is thinking we care about HOW they do something, when we just care about WHAT we need them to do. Six Flags Theme parks takes photos of you on rides, if you want a "digital" version of it, it's called an "INTERNET product". If you want to manage your booking on Avianca's website, it's under "electronic services".  It's nuts.  Think about what customers want to do, not the infrastructure you needed to develop to do it. …see more
