Bloomberg Economics on the latest manufacturing data out of Europe: In September, activity "in the euro zone expanded at the fastest pace in more than two years" and, as the bounce was trade led, "Germany was responsible for around half of the gains." https://lnkd.in/gXYFASV #economy #economics #markets #growth #manufacturing #bloomberg …see more

Link to the OECD's latest World Economic Outlook which has really interesting analyses/charts. Just like the latest from the World Bank (see Monday's post), it's more negative on growth etc than the IMF -- though expect the latter to be revised that way. https://lnkd.in/gXAsv2y #economy #markets OECD - OCDE The World Bank World Bank Group International Monetary Fund #growth …see more

What today's US Q-1 GDP number will/won't be, and the big uncertainty: It will be ... The first quarterly drop since Q-1 2014 The biggest contraction since Q-1 2009 It won't be ... The largest contraction for this shock. (That should be Q-2.) And the big uncertainty: how does all this change longer-term trends. (WSJ chart) #economy #growth #markets #gdp #wsj …see more

There’s a lot of sub-skills to writing. Telling a good story that people can relate to is one of them.  You don’t read a book about “How to meet women” by Brad Pitt. Brad Pitt can’t tell me stories of the lifelong struggle to meet someone to date. I can’t relate to him. The best books are people who have been through the struggle. The only way to really learn is to have hardship, overcome it in various ways as you encounter more and more difficulties, and the come back a changed person to tell the tale.  http://ow.ly/3A9s30iuK0O …see more

Someone the other day in a casual off hand remark said “ I take a lot of risks because I learn a lot of shit from it “.......And it was oddly insightful.

Every time I do something a bit promotional it always feels cheesy and self important. The era of the personal brand makes everything seem boastful or strategic. Announcing where you're speaking, retweeting something nice said about you, promoting pieces that praise your work. Anyone got any ideas for doing this and not seeming overly promotional? …see more

Really believe that in the modern age people are more lonely, have lost social skills, and spend their time keeping in touch, but not connecting. This is a great piece on it. My phone has about 40 concurrent, text based, poor quality "chats"  on it at any time. …see more

A throwback to 17 years ago, when Netflix went public. You can see in Reed's answer one of the many reasons I joined the company amidst the dot-com implosion just one year earlier - strategic thinking. You can also see me with slightly more hair. Thanks, Dr. Joel Mier for sharing this. Also, love the announcer deriding the free trial as if were a dumb idea. #netflix #ipo #leadership #ceo …see more

I still have the cross-body travel bag that I bought in #Juba , #SouthSudan in January of 2011, while I was helping lead a reporter training workshop for Voice of America . I'm surprised by how sturdy it still is. It's a good thing, too. I used it on Saturday, June 6 to report about the Washington, DC protests related to the murder of #GeorgeFloyd . I wrote a story about the protests for National Geographic , and also posted on my Twitter and Instagram feeds too. (@RJConsults and Rachella55) Getting back to my journalistic roots by covering the DC demonstrations managed to challenge, inspire, and sustain me all at once. I knew #America could be better than what it has looked like to the rest of the world lately, and yesterday was the proof. I have hope again. And come to think of it, I’m surprised by how sturdy I still am, too. #DCProtests #GeorgeFloyd #BlackLivesMatter #BlackLivesMatterPlaza #racialinjustice #policebrutality #racism #journalism #journalismmatters …see more

Here's something really important to consider about product design: Not all products have to be habit-forming. Life insurance policies don't need to be habit-forming! What's important to realize is that helping users form a habit is a competitive advantage. This means that when you DON'T build a habit, you have to find a competitive advantage elsewhere. Some other competitive moats may include: Intellectual property, economies of scale, brand loyalty, or network effects. But if you don’t have a sustainable competitive advantage, you enter a never-ending fight on price and features. You drop your price, the competition drops theirs. You add a feature, the competition adds the same feature. All of these things cut into the bottom line. This is why habit-formation is so valuable: it’s a sustainable competitive advantage. #Hooked #UX #ProductDesign …see more

A quick work from home tip for all parents who have a hard time concentrating with kids at home all day 👇 • Find the silliest hat you have (or get one on Amazon) • Put it on anytime you need to concentrate and get some work done. • Let your family know that when you’re wearing this hat, you shouldn’t be interrupted unless it’s an emergency. My wife purchased one with LED lights that she calls her “concentration crown.” When she wears it, she’s clearly letting our daughter (and me) know not to interrupt her unless it’s absolutely necessary. Sometimes, we need explicit ways to signal our requests for interruption-free time. Techniques like this will help colleagues or family members pause and assess their own behaviors BEFORE they break your concentration. You’re essentially interrupting the interrupter with a clear visual signal. Any other work from home tips you’ve developed over the past few months? #Indistractable #WFH #Productivity …see more
