When winter closes in on lakes in the north east the thermocline rises closer to the surface and the lake freezes. Ice damage can be devastating to structures build near or on the water. Water bubblers save the day! #water #environment #HappyNewYear …see more

When I first fell in love with the cultures of China and Japan decades ago in college, the rise of "Japan, Inc." was the story, and, outside of the "4 Tiger economies" of Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore, the rest of Asia was under-developed economically. Today Asia is an economic powerhouse. This week McKinsey & Company, in partnership with the McKinsey Global Institute (MGI), launches Future of Asia – a new multi-channel, multi-year research effort that examines, not how quickly Asia will rise, but how Asia will lead. “Only invite people you know well to connect on LinkedIn” and “Here are 1,353 contacts we think you should invite” . This site has no idea what it’s about any more. From Snapchat to Instagram to Facebook, even Amazon, apps that are essentially refined by continuous A-B tests and user/engagement metrics, end up messy and lost. I wish companies could work around a role in people’s life’s, not chasing data and ad money. Maybe if they offered a clear role and specific value we’d pay 100 times more and with money not attention. …see more

YOU DON'T NEED THE JOB TO BE HAPPY! Depression is highest in fully employed, first world countries. The two highest countries for depression? France and the United States. We simply were not made to work 60 hours a week. Archaeologists figure that our paleo ancestors "worked" maybe 12 hours a week. Why is work depressing? Not all of these reasons but maybe some of them. ➞ Being bossed around by people we don't respect. ➞ Being forced to be friends just because they share our cubicle walls ➞ Meetings ➞ Seeing the 80/20 rule in action where 20% of the employees create 80% of the value and the other 80% just barely survive. ➞ Being mandated by an 800 page guidebook how you can talk to people of the opposite sex or of different skin colors. ➞ Seeing corporate political agendas rule over financial realities and not being able to say anything about it for fear of being fired. ➞ Spending 6am to 7pm getting ready for work, commuting to work, working, commuting back, too tired to move when you return home. #Jobs are not so great. And they cause a lot of suffering. And you don't really need them. Bear with me... http://bit.ly/2m32LTb …see more
"For all the major moves in my life… I've trusted my instincts. I take in all the information I can gather. I listen to proposals, ideas, and advice. Then I go with my gut, what my heart feels most strongly. When you don't know what to do, do nothing. Get quiet so you can hear the still, small voice—your inner GPS guiding you to true North." - Oprah Winfrey This resonates with me. The most important decisions of my life have not been logical. But they have been fulfilling because I let my heart guide me. …see more
