If all the money that had flowed into Ad Tech, was spent on tech /processes /empathy /creativity to make better, more loved advertising, we'd all be in a far better place. Instead it's all entirely focussed on better targeting/attribution.

This Time magazine cover caught my eye a few weeks ago while waiting in line at Safeway. Who doesn't love emojis? It reminded me of Scott Adams ' formula for happiness = health x freedom. Health so you can enjoy life, freedom so you choose to do what you love. I'd add two more: relationships and service. One good thing about these strange interim times, is we've stopped talking about the normal silly tech distractions like 3D Printing, Bots, IOT, Drones, or how Voice will change everything. We've moved on from vapid conversations about brand purpose to more sensible questions about how to better serve customers, how to create new products quickly, or how to pivot business models faster than ever. For years we've gone on about Blockchain but perhaps we should have talked about how to let call center staff work from home. On the 100th anniversary of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela’s birth, I must credit him with changing my life. When I wrote my 1979 high school senior paper about the injustice of Mandela’s imprisonment—expressing my outrage that he would probably die behind bars—I had no hope or expectation that I would ever meet Tata Madiba. So when I actually did meet him in 1994, I had no choice but to open my mind to the magic of the impossible. The privilege of shaking hands with the man who was willing to sacrifice his life for the cause of justice infused me with the responsibility to make a difference, however big or small, in this world. In these days of anxiety, fear and what too often feels like chaos, nothing else makes sense but to use whatever time we have on this Earth to do good. Stand up for what’s right. Express empathy and compassion often. And don’t let anyone or anything imprison your mind. When you are mentally strong and free, no chains or bars, figurative or real, can stop you. May the next 100 years yield at least a 1,000 women and men around the world whose contributions equal Mandela’s profound example of #truth, #justice and #love for #humanity. My TEDx coming up focuses on storytelling. And there are few things that illustrate the power of story better than this.👇🏽 In the 60s a Harvard Psychologist approached a school in California. Basically saying, “hey, I have this test I can give your students to help you identify which students are special.” The kids were then separated into two groups “average” and “special”. A year went by and the test was incredibly accurate. The “special” group blew the other group out of the water in everything from: test scores, curiosity, happiness, etc. Even the teachers were happier. The thing is, that test was 100% bullshit and the students were chosen at random. So 1). A good story can help sell anything. And 2). Pay attention to the narratives that you’re telling yourself.
