Starting the week on a high, sending congratulations to photojournalists Lynsey Addario and Nichole Sobecki ! Their work was included in National Geographic 's ranking of the "50 Best Photos From 2019--So Far." Lynsey's photos included one of Edna Adan Ismail overseeing a #maternalhealth clinic in Habasweyn, #Somaliland . NIchole captured a young girl--the sole survivor of the #Ebola virus that killed the rest of her immediate family--near Butembo, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. I wrote the stories that accompanied their amazing work, and it's thrilling to think that I collaborated with some of the best photojournalists in the business today. Check out the rest of the photos that made the #NatGeo list here--> https://lnkd.in/eMwiczs Edna Adan Hospital Foundation #NationalGeographic #Africa #maternalmortality #photojournalism #photography …see more

My husband and I celebrated our 23rd wedding anniversary yesterday. Why am I posting this on LinkedIn? Because your spouse has a huge impact on your career. When we were first married I always said I needed a “wife”, someone who was home so I could come home and not have the traditional home responsibilities to deal with! Well that didn’t happen but we figured it out. I found flexibility so we could take care of our kids with two working parents. Both juggling parenting and work responsibilities like lots of couples. The last few weeks I’ve been reflecting a lot on successes and learning experiences and how I got here. And I couldn’t have done it without Christopher Padar MBA CSSBB . A huge success in his own right but has been known to introduce himself as “Mr Jody Padar” ❤️. #radicalcpa #leadership #womansleadership #cpafirm #nontraditional #reflecting #leadership #accountingfirm …see more

Comparing your career to someone else’s is like going for a jog in the morning and comparing yourself to everyone else out for a run. You don’t know 👇🏽 - How long they’ve been running. - What their background is (they could be a professional athlete or this could be their first time exercising). - What type of training they’re doing. - etc. Run your own race. #justQ 🖖🏽🖤 …see more

Having a niche is a total game-changer. But don't force yourself to specialize in something just for the sake of having a niche. My favorite part of my speeches are the Q&A's. Someone asked me how they should go about finding their niche. And while it's not the popular answer it takes exploration and self-awareness. - In college I switched my major more times than I can count. - My career as a marketer I tried multiple industries and fields. - When I started my first company I pivoted over and over again until I found something that I enjoyed and something that worked. Exploration. Don't subscribe to the belief that you need to have everything figured out. I totally believe people should have a niche. And that it should be something that 1). You're great at and 2). you enjoy (it more than likely will be an intersection of multiple things you're good at/enjoy). And if you're having trouble figuring out yours, don't be afraid to make that a part of your story. You can always pivot later. That's the route I took. #justQ 🖖🏽🖤 …see more

Remember when we had one email address, one voicemail inbox and one way to see SMS's. That seems simple now. We now have inboxes in every app. DM's on Twitter, SnapChat, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, Instant messages on WeChat, Whatsapp, Line and more. We've comments and direct messages on Linkedin, we've got Slack, a personal email inbox each, a work email account, a spam email account. It's an absolute mess. I wish we could tidy this all up. It's nuts. …see more

Today, the number of people who follow me on LinkedIn passed 250,000. First, let me send mad love and honor to the African continent, where I suspect the bulk of my followers live. That’s because since I first touched down in Accra, Ghana in April of 2003, I’ve organized and/or participated in at least one journalism training workshop in 11 different African countries, and lived in two of them. Africa taught me how to be a strong leader. I learned how to be a Mama Hen there, too. I realized that the two personas can peacefully co-exist, especially when you’re nurturing young minds. To the rest of the folks around the world who clicked the little “Follow” box beside my name, you can’t begin to know what that small gesture means to me. Along my path of reinvention and renewal, I’m trying to find meaning by adding value. If you believe I’ve done that at some point, keep reading. To LinkedIn, what began as little more than an occasional online diary for my random thoughts has morphed into one of the biggest challenges/opportunities of my professional life. If I can just keep learning, writing and communicating relevant information in interesting ways, I know my career will soar. #Africa #journalism #inspiration #career #writing …see more

When it comes to changing our behavior, one of the mistakes people make is not focusing on consistency over intensity. People who want to read more buy eight novels in one go. People who want to eat healthier go to the store and get three weeks’ worth of tofu and sprouts. People who want to get in shape, sign-up to run a marathon despite the fact they can’t yet run a mile. To change the way we behave, we tend to go all out all at once. We think, “this change is important to make, so I’m going to do everything I can to make it happen right now.” What we don’t realize is that behavior change is more of a process than it is a destination. If you haven’t read regularly or eaten healthy years and years, it’s very difficult to maintain that level of intensity over the long-term. Especially when the benefits of these improved habits aren’t immediately visible and can often take years to observe. Yes, the most well-read people can finish a 500-page book in a couple of days and the healthiest eaters can meal plan weeks ahead. They didn’t get there overnight. More than anything, consistency makes behavioral change successful. Starting with something you can manage and scaling from there will yield the best results in the long run. #BehaviorChange …see more

SET PEOPLE UP FOR SUCCESS Stop making flawed assumptions when you delegate a task. Ask yourself, “Where am I making assumptions about the skills and knowledge of the person to whom I am delegating this task or project? Have I assumed that they are clear on the goals of the project? Have I assumed that they understand the terms I am using, that they have the skills and knowledge needed or the time, tools, and other resources required?” Check your assumptions. When they do not match reality, take steps to fill the gaps by providing the missing knowledge, skills, tools, and resources. …see more

Things I don't let my org do: - Work and/or answer emails at night and/or weekends - Get randomized by other people/orgs - Juggle multiple things at once I'm religious about these rules to the point of fanaticism. The ONLY times they get broken are rare edge cases (a big launch that requires off-hours work). Otherwise, I'm simply not running the business the right way, and that gets fixed STAT. I've done it other ways before. It was wrong. This is the right way to run a business. Build smart, work smarter, learn/adapt, and you'll have happy, productive employees who love their jobs …see more

Just some Tuesday humor and tech-gratitude for you all... With the world relying so heavily on technology to stay connected to nurture relationships and to complete projects, having everything CRASH is a disaster! And before you tease me for having a Mac, know that I have a wonderful DELL😜 My computer decided to crash on Friday thanks to the tedious Windows update, and my productivity unfortunately sank, using my phone alone for zoom, emails and rescheduling. Today I am extremely grateful for my team that is covering for my absence 🤩 Let's be more thankful for the team of techies that resolve these issues and get us back into the swing of things. Their essential duties during this dramatic shift in workplace connectivity are deeply appreciated and often overlooked! Now, go and send some love to your IT folks for their long hours and instant project SWAPS to accommodate your urgent tech support needs! #technology #connection #chantelshares …see more

LinkedIn is getting to be a noisy place 🙉 To help you separate the wheat from the chaff, I wanted to highlight just some folks I follow who consistently deliver excellent value. Sarah Johnston - If you are looking for a job, Sarah’s content is some of the best! I’m not in the job market and I still find her lens and perspectives to be beyond refreshing. Sarah Evans - Not many people understand PR for the digital age like Sarah and no one I know shares as much value as she does in that realm. Elizabeth Marshall - Elizabeth is the thought leader’s leader. Many of the top authors and experts I know rely on her guidance to grow their platform. Rohit Bhargava - Trendsetter and go-better, as publisher and author, Rohit is a champion for many. His insights are always on point. Pelpina Trip - If you use your phone to shoot videos and haven’t discovered Pelpina yet - you are welcome. She’s a goldmine or great information - all delivered with the best of Charles E. Gaudet II - Business strategist extraordinaire. Charlie and the team consistently share great tips on sales, marketing, and more. Chris Brogan - If you haven’t checked out Chris’ awesome shows, you are missing out. He always over-delivers. Who else do you think is making LinkedIn a better place? …see more

'Notice that the stiffest tree is most easily cracked, while the bamboo or willow survives by bending with the wind.' - Bruce Lee. They say it is not the strongest or the most intelligent who will survive but those who can best manage change. Flexibility is needed in every aspect of running startups. When plan A fails, flexible entrepreneurs are prepared with plan B, C, D. They are in control despite the situation, think on their feet and overcome setbacks. Flexible people learn from their mistakes and experiments and develop an alternate/ better way to do things. How to develop #flexibility ? - Anticipate Change - #Change is easier to handle when you aren't surprised by it. Stay calm and plan ahead - Stretch yourself - Settling into comfortable routines can create rigidity. Set stretched unthinkable #goals , challenge yourself. More ambiguous the #journey , the more flexible you will be. - Learn something new - #Learning automatically puts one in a flexible, adaptable state of mind. Pick up a new language or a new skill. - Have a strong support network - Getting diverse opinions makes one more open-minded and flexible. …see more

🛑 STOP quitting when you win — go until you can’t go anymore. 🛑 I was talking to one of my business coaches and he was explaining his wife’s mindset as a D1 high jumper. - Every win she ever had ended in 3 subsequent failures. - She didn’t stop when she beat the rest of the competition. She stopped when she could no longer jump over the next height. I was a collegiate triple jumper so I totally resonate with that. And it’s shaped my mindset as an entrepreneur. Work every day to put yourself out of business. Push yourself. I’m not okay with being the best. I want to dominate, leave a legacy, and be the best version of me.
