We have thousands of restaurants that are closing. And millions of people who are hungry. Am I alone in seeing a solution here if politicians got off their asses.
Nobody knows exactly why Tom Brady left the New England Patriots. (Other than Tom Brady.) When a player takes his talents to another city, it's easy for franchise ownership to vilify the player. To make fans feel that they've been betrayed--especially if the player experiences success. But the New England Patriots took a different route. After Brady led the Buccaneers to a win in Super Bowl LV, the Patriots shared a simple, seven-word tweet: "Congratulations to the greatest of all time." The tweet was all class, showing that there's overwhelming goodwill from the franchise towards their legendary quarterback. It's a huge lesson for employers everywhere: If your best person happens to leave for a competitor, don't vilify them. Don't tear them down. Don't badmouth them. Don't burn your bridge. Instead, congratulate them. Because if you leave the door open, you never know what the future will hold. Second week of AIGA San Francisco & SF Design Week! 🎨 Fun time geeking out on how to design product inclusivity and accessibility with Wending Lu . Great job on paneling Catherine Idylle (and not pictured Allison Shaw Margo Stern Fahrettin Tasdelen )! Cool reunion with Eric Xiao Calvin Woo too! 🙂 Few takeaways from session if you're interested: - Take into consideration of temporary, situational, and permanent abilities when designing products - Treat everyone with dignity during user research - Listen to all customers, especially if they're not your mainstream market - Inclusivity is beyond abilities, but also includes socioeconomics, age, race, gender, and more - Be familiar with accessibility compliancy like WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines), Section 508: Accessibility, ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) - A good resource to get started is Microsoft Inclusive Design Principles (link below) #BeInfinity Lessons …see more

I am so very proud of, and inspired by, the five young Kenyan girls who will be representing the African continent at Google 's headquarters in this year's international Technovation Challenge competition, where girls pitch the mobile apps they've developed to end problems in their communities. Other Technovation sponsors include Verizon and the United Nations The five students from Kisumu in Western #Kenya developed I-cut, an app that connects girls at risk of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) with rescue centers, and which offers legal and medical help to those who have been cut. My heartfelt congratulations to Stacy Owino, Purity Achieng, Ivy Akinyi, Synthia Otieno and Macrine Atieno as they head to California on August 6. They are such powerful embodiments of the limitless potential and innovation that exist from within the African continent. via Daniel Wesangula for Thomson Reuters Foundation News #Africa #Kenya #Technology #STEM #Girls #Gender …see more

For the first time ever, Facebook, Google, Apple and Amazon will be facing Congress in the #antitrust probe. Breaking up of AT&T in the 1980s led to better consumer products and more affordable services in the long run. Similarly, the outcomes of the probe with the tech giants will likely have far-reaching consequences. #JeffBezos opening statement is an insightful read. He also addresses some points that led to #Amazon ’s success. Some key takeaways: -Companies of all sizes should be open to #scrutiny . Embracing transparency is shown to have a high-level impact on performance and productivity -Most of our regrets are acts of omission- the things we didn’t try, the paths untraveled -Obsess about your customers. (The word "customers" is mentioned a total of 37 times in Bezos' letter) -Failure inevitably comes along with invention and risk-taking. Be a ‘garage entrepreneur’. I launched my solo show and I am beyond geeked. Hands down, this is the thing in my life that I am most excited about. And then I was looking at analytics a few seconds after uploading my first two episodes. And then these thoughts entered my mind: - Damn, I’m starting from 0. This is going to be hard. - Everyone is starting a gaming podcast all of a sudden… - Why the hell do I think I can grow this show? - And so on... And I sat there. Sulking. And then my girlfriend asked me what was wrong. So I told her. And somewhere along the line I said this, “none of it matters because I’m just doing this to have fun & learn.” What’s the why? Write it down. And pull it out when you feel like I did. …see more

The software is designed to detect greater than a mild level of diabetic retinopathy by using an A.I. algorithm to analyze images of the adult eye taken with a special retinal camera. A doctor uploads the images to a cloud server, and the software then delivers a positive or negative result. This is the first device authorized to provide a screening decision without the need for a specialized doctor to interpret the image or results. ECB President, Christine Lagarde, is right in warning European leaders that GDP could well decline by as much as 15%. I'm going to talk about why and when you should stop paying back your credit card debt. But I still feel an itch to address #401ks. Listen: They are scams. This is another trillion dollar industry that has a lot of money at stake if people stop believing in the mythology bolted to the scam. We've got the best array of ways to communicate that we've ever had. Text, email, slack, voice chat, phone calls, conference calls, meetings, collaborative documents, IM etc. It's weird how little time we put into thinking which way is the best way to get things done. So many meetings should be collaborative documents, so many texts should be emails, so many emails should be phone calls. If we could all think a bit more about the best way, not the easiest way, we'd get a lot more done. And if we stop conventions from the past about how to speak in new channels, we'd see huge benefits too. …see more

YOU being YOU is basically magic and there's math behind it 👇 Harvard published a fascinating infographic that lays out all the math required to calculate the probability of you becoming YOU. The numbers get CRAZY! Researchers compared the probability of a person's unique existence to the probability of 2 MILLION people getting together to play a game using one TRILLION-sided die. The odds of you being born as exactly you are basically the same as the odds of all those two million people rolling that trillion-sided dice and all coming up with the EXACT SAME NUMBER. It's virtually impossible. 🤯 Today we discussed SELF-WORTH and how common a lack of self-love is in adults--something we lose from traumas and events in adolescence. But you don't have to STAY that way! You can change who you are and be whom you want to be. It takes WORK and it is NOT easy... ...but nothing worth having comes easy. #growth …see more
