I went to a protest yesterday. I had to sit down because I had mixed feelings. Initially it was a bunch of people (not of color) taking photos of their signs and letting people know where they were. Which made me angry. And when everyone gathered it was a predominantly white crowd. And for the first time in a long time I realized how exhausting it is to be black. I never thought I'd live in a world like that where I would see people that didn't look like me... fighting for me. "Good" isn't the right word... but I felt hopeful. The amount of people that reached out to me to ask questions after my recent posts... the amount of people that shared... the amount of conversations. I'm hopeful. For the first time in a long time. I don't believe there should be a reward and I don't believe people are doing this for a reward. The reward is the change. But from this 26 year old kid from Minneapolis, MN... thank you to everyone that is stepping up. Thank you to everyone that is uncomfortable and figuring it out right now. Thank you for speaking up. There’s only one secret: over-promise and over-deliver. I once had a boss who told me not to do that. He told me, “once you start delivering on X then everyone is going to want you to do that. Sometimes when I am dealing with a dilemma, I reach out to someone who I respect to help me think through the situation. Those are the people whom I consider as my mentors. Mentors need to bring, the context to deal with the problem at hand, to the table. They need to be honest and objective in their feedback or dialogue while bringing in empathy. Feel like working from home is one of those shifts that has a tipping point. It's not being held back by tech but by culture, especially trust. We thought it was self driving cars that could sweep in and change the fabric of cities fast. It could just be someone in HR updating a policy in "Word", to say, "just do your job brilliantly, you know how to do that, we trust you, where you are and when you work is up to you" Culture is more interesting and powerful than tech, and the causal loops between them are most fascinating. …see more

I continue to be amazed by how many people managers still don't understand that today's workforce no longer responds to a “top down, I tell you what to do, you punch a clock for every task and I micro-manage your work and you'll like it” style of “leadership”. The culture and dynamics of people leadership have completely changed. It's now an equal partnership of supporting common goals and bringing people along. It's about showing people that they are not disposable objects, and that you genuinely care about them as human beings. It's about being transparent, genuine and kind. And most importantly, earning trust. Earning trust by not breaking your promises. By not being abrasive, crass, callous, vulgar, violent and rude. By not misleading or lying to your people, hiding things from them, or operating with alternate objectives and hidden agendas in mind. As more and more "new-school" leaders and companies emerge, the "old guard" of management drifts further into isolation and irrelevance. Learn to lead from a place of honesty, transparency, and kindness. From first principles. Or you'll find yourself "leading" shrinking teams, diminishing companies and eventually being replaced by someone who gets what leadership really means. #leadership #culture #management #dayone …see more

This short video from 1990 gave me goosebumps. He could visualise an agile work environment of remote collaboration and best talent coming together irrespective of geographical boundaries.
