Quibi. $1,750,000,000 wasted launching something that any single conversation with any single person under 40 , could have told you within 5 mins was dead on arrival. The problem these days is too much expertise in the old way of doing things. It’s way harder to unlearn what you know than to learn new ways of doing things. Disruption isn’t so much a threat because people don’t see it coming, so much that people have been trained to think their success in the past means something in the future when things change. We all need to constantly assume we are wrong and seek people to challenge our views. For one, the entire executive board structure of companies is criminally negligent. Preferring like minded groupthink from the identical privileged but esteemed wise folk of yesteryear. Wisdom is vital, but so are people with careers ahead of them, unafraid to tell executives they need to rethink what they think they know, be more open minded and listen to their customers …see more

My best friend is in a medically-induced coma, and today is his sixth day on a ventilator. He has a very small chance of survival. If he does survive, I’m told that he will never be the person he was before he was intubated. I am sharing this with you because my best friend from childhood, my true brother from another mother, was a complete coronavirus denier. He truly believed that the severity of the disease and the scope of the problem was being “hyped” for political reasons. My friend is not a stupid person; quite conversely -- he’s a brilliant doctor. What he had was a political ideology, and he chose political rhetoric over science. Please don’t make the same mistake. #coronavirus #science #covid19 …see more

I debated whether to celebrate Ugadi this year or not. It felt that there was nothing to celebrate. But the only normalcy we have to our lives is not giving up on what is important. So we got energised for Ugadi. Ugadi in Sanskrit means yuga (age) & ādi (beginning): "the beginning of a new age". Ugadi is New year celebration in South India. There are 3 distinct aspects to how my family celebrates: 1. The Ugadi Pachadi: This is offered in puja and is the most important for me. It represents the metaphor that life is a mix of complex emotions. It has 6 ingredients- neem flower (bitterness), jaggery (sweetness), tamarind (sourness), salt (saltiness), chilli (spicy), raw mango (tangy) 2. Rangoli: More of a lost art, in my childhood we took great pride in making complex rangolis. What we made today as you can see is not very complex but atleast continuing the tradition 3. Obattu/Puran Poli: In my house this is the most important dish for the festival. Homemade hot off the girdle Obattu is a treat, and that was the highlight today I wish you all a Happy Ugadi. Like Ugadi Pachadi, our share of troubles are front-loaded in the first half of the year but we will end it on sweet high note. Stay safe, Stay strong. …see more

We see this every time. Every. Single. Time. Something unknown happens. The worst case scenario is assumed. People behave irrationally in a panic. A billion arguments happen on Twitter and Facebook while the market collapses. Then... more knowledge is gained. Uncertainty is resolved. People calm down. The market recovers. And we move onto the next crisis (What will Prince Harry actually do for a living to gain his "financial independence"?) . . . #money #writing #lifestyle #investing …see more
