"Best Practice" is the enemy. Best Practice" isn't the best way to do anything, its the way of doing things most like everyone else in your field. It's the easiest, laziest, most risk averse thing to do. It means the world becomes ever more narrow, ever more the same, ever more identical, and makes the rewards of doing something different ever greater. So please let's not pray at the alter of "best practice", let's surround ourselves with what people want, what technology makes possible and create what's better based on that. …see more

If you're interviewing for a job or just looking for a job - know whom you’re talking to. It matters. Big time. Different positions, different responsibilities, different impact: Talent sourcer - creates a recruitment pipeline, from job posting to personal headhunting. Similar to scouting in sports. Talent Ops - enables the talent organization to work more effectively. In charge of scheduling and the interview process. Talent Acquisition Specialist - manages the entire hiring process, from screening to contract. Talent Marketing Specialist- develops the company's Employer Branding and Recruitment Marketing strategies. In charge of evolving recruitment, so the company can attract top talent. HRBP - Responsible for you from the moment your onboarding process ends. HR analytics - collects and analyzes HR data, and applies it to make recommendations related to recruitment, retention, and legal compliance. In smaller companies, one person can cover a few of these positions. But these are DIFFERENT positions. HR is NOT recruitment. And recruitment is NOT HR. it’s complicated :-) #hr #hiring #career …see more

Please next time you apply for a job, make it about them not you Don't say " I'm great at this, I love doing that, I've lived here, I really enjoy things like X. I'm good because I can also do Z, I once got frustrated doing Q but found out I like M in the process" Say "You need people who can do Z and Y and P, and this is me, and here is evidence I'm great at that. You need someone who is like Z and X, like I am. You don't say you need someone who has this, but I've got it, and this is why it's likely what you need. The sad reality is that for 99% of roles, especially away from the top or in small companies, people are recruiting around a role, not a person. This is is wrong, but it is what it is. Make it about their needs, not your wishes. …see more

Too many creators forget this! 👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽 Influence is trust. A friend told me that once on my podcast and it's stuck with me since. I got to meet Gary Vaynerchuck at an event recently and it got me thinking about influence. WHY is he so influential. Why did I get so excited to meet him? And I think where a lot of people go wrong is this... they make it all about themselves. I respect Gary so much because I can go back and pinpoint the moment his content changed the trajectory of my life. He helped me get to where I am today. He's not the hero, he's a guide in my story. That's real influence. It's not likes on a video. It's not a verified checkmark. It's establishing trust and helping other people get to where they want to be. Build trust. #justQ 🖖🏽🖤 #entrepreneurship #business …see more

Getting a new job today - that’s a whole job in itself. It ain’t what it used to be. But I still see candidates use the same old methods. The most popular one is “spray and pray” - sending your CVs to any position, regardless of how relevant it is for you. It can’t hurt, right? Wrong❌ Applying for every single job out there shows Recruiters that you lack focus, passion, and talent. Not very good qualities. Worse than that - sometimes you’ll get in the system, in which case you’ll be marked as someone who was rejected multiple times. So what should you do? 📌Research the company you want to work for. 📌Research the people who work there. 📌Find a RELEVANT job description, one that 📌you have a real shot at. 📌Research that position and try to talk to people in that company who know what it means 📌Adapt your CV to better reflect that position Then - apply✅ *This isn’t 2005 anymore* Invest time and effort, and the chances of finding your dream job will dramatically increase. #hr #people #linkedin …see more

As someone who grew up in a low income and immigrant household, being invited to speak at the Peninsula College Fund's Career Day at Visa was such an humbling experience. It's also refreshing and inspiring to see tech brands like Visa taking the lead in furthering this cause and in the process positively shaping the future of such a deserving, yet underserved group of determined and talented students. I entered Silicon Valley with no ties to tech—both of my parents never attended high school. Through personal branding and platforms like LinkedIn, I have been able to develop a meaningful network of mentors that has radically transformed my career and life. While low income students may not grow up being taught the importance of networking, college is the best time to change that for the better. tl;dr (too long; didn't read): Treat your personal brand as a tapestry of experiences and relationships, not a transactional tool. When done with purpose and authenticity, your personal brand will compound over time, and put you in the power position to be discovered and unlock disruptive opportunities. A first for me today - Breaking from my work routine to read a book to kids over a webinar :-) As part of finding new ways to help our employees balance the priorities of work, family and managing their households, our TransUnion Africa business introduced an AFK hour (Away from Keyboard) some months ago. During this time no business meetings are scheduled and employees are encouraged to break away from their work routines and spend time with their families, have lunch, go for a walk, etc. With many kids still away from their physical classrooms, this past month we introduced Kids Connect as an extension to the AFK program. Today I had the chance to read a book to children in the 8 - 12 age group. Tough audience and my nerves were shot. I chose one of my daughter Erin’s favorite books - Mr. Stink by David Walliams and I think I may have hit the mark 😌 Absolute joy watching the faces of the kids light up during story time. #innovation #leadership #family Ndivhu Nepfumbada Sarah Steinbach Anne Leyden …see more

Age is irrelevant. For anyone that feels that they are "too" young or "too" old, know that's bullshit. If it were up to the world you would be too young until you're too old. If you want to make an impact then just get out there and do it. Things started happening for me when I stopped asking for permission and gave myself permission to do great things. If you don't believe in yourself then you can't expect anyone else to. Whether you're 18 or 81 you have value to bring to the world. Share it. #justQ 🖖🏽🖤 #21Challenge …see more

From the Wall Street Journal: "The Dow Jones Industrial Average staged its best two-week performance since the 1930s, a dramatic rebound that has left many investors with a confounding reality: soaring share prices and a floundering economy." One can think of three possible explanations for this dispersion: Markets are a lot more forward-looking and are comfortable looking through what many believe is a temporary and reversible downturn in the economy; Markets are over-optimistic, conditioned by years of great success for "buy-the-dip" strategies; and Actual and expected support by the Federal Reserve has again decoupled markets from economic and corporate fundamentals. Depending on who you ask, you are likely to get a different ranking of the three ... with one quite interesting tendency: The closer the investors are to the real economy, the more cautious they are about the sustainability of the rally (e.g., what the Journal reported about Warren Buffett's approach this time around and compared to the 2008/09 crisis, and the remarks by Mark Cuban). #markets #investing #bonds #economy #volatility #equities #stocks #interestrates #federalreserve #selloff #investmentmanagement #investors #Fed #wsj …see more

The entire world of talent is now oriented around risk reduction and compliance and that really has to stop soon before we ruin our future. Ps. No talent department should ever ask me, as someone who is delighted to be a reference, to spend 20 mins of my time filling in forms to explain why the candidate you like is good. That’s your job. Call me up and I’ll wax poetically about their wonder in a 3 minute phone call but I’m not the HR departments administrative assistant. …see more

I met Shay ☀️ Rowbottom back in 2017 — we became friends. I helped her get started on LinkedIn. She’s been crushing it ever since. At the time, I felt like a dumb kid finally transitioning into doing what he wanted. I looked up to Shay and her partners because they were my age running a multi-million dollar company. Meeting them, changed my relationship with success. There are some of us that overestimate our significance. “Me, me, me.” I’ve always struggled with the opposite. “Am I significant? Does it matter if I am?” COVID has changed a lot for me. Forced me to ask myself questions that I hadn’t thought of asking. Forced me to feel things that I never thought I would feel. But most importantly it’s shown me that there are multiple sides to every story. Every encounter. I know that I’ve impacted lives. But I could never articulate the impact that so many of you have had on me. So thank you Shay — and so many others — for impacting me. I wouldn’t be who I am if things didn’t play out in the way that they did. #justQ 🖖🏽🖤 …see more

Guess who got her FIRST CLEAN MRI?! 👆This girl! When I began sharing my story in front of a few dozen people on LinkedIn, I would have never dreamed of hitting stages across the world spreading my message of hope and inclusion. In fact, the idea of the spotlight made my skin crawl. I still prefer being the wizard behind the curtain. But as I celebrate my first clean scan I remember my WHY which is to empower and inspire the world of incredible humans living with chronic illness and disability. Whether you're searching for your next role or you're struggling to level up your business, I hope my message touches your heart. You are in incredible human being, made for more. Don't slow down. Don't give up. There is always hope ♥ #Hope #Disability #ChronicIllness #Inclusion …see more

The worst thing we ever did in corporate America was to take the most vital part of any company - the people powering it - and label it so dismissively as “human resources.” We reduced talent to a simple asset: one to be standardized, controlled, commoditized, and managed like any other form of capital. We created a department whose sole purpose is to extract value and enforce compliance, and put them in charge of an ecosystem built around formalized processes, sameness, common practices, and conformity. The result is the institutionalized mediocrity plaguing many legacy companies today. A pandemic that will only become more problematic as we advance into the post-digital age: a world of agile, talent-focused companies that are set up to disrupt, excel and grow. It’s time to disrupt Human Resources - a piece Adriana Stan & I co-wrote for the World Economic Forum: …see more

Dear Jeff Weiner and LinkedIn team: Congrats on your continued growth and expansion into India - that's honestly exciting stuff!! As we continue to patronize your product for our many professional endeavors, here are a couple of feature requests that I believe would benefit your customers (us!!): - Allow update edits (a la Facebook). For instance, this is a very useful feature to have when someone like me attempts to post something clever, the update becomes popular, but we later realize that we've mis-spelled something - Increase the number of characters allowed in the status update …see more
